Advice on 70s Seamaster (cal. 563)

I'm currently in the market for my first watch, and I like the idea of sticking to either solid gold or stainless (thus avoiding revealing wear or scratching that you find on GF/capped models) for my first big watch purchase. I found this 14kt Seamaster online and was wondering if it seems worth the $1600 pricetag.

From what I could gather by looking around here, the KM6610 is an American-made gold case--but the inside of it, shown here, doesn't look very much like gold. This watch has also been offered for some time now (a month or two) and hasn't sold--which makes me think that either there's something wrong with it that I'm missing, or that it's not such a bargain for a piece that, I should hope, would last me until I bit the dust.

You guys are the experts here--what do you think?

Hello John and welcome to the forum. I personally don’t like american cased Omegas, I would stick to something made in Bienne for my first watch, just my personal opinion. The papers and box are a nice detail but for just a well used watch head at 1.6k the watch is overpriced.

The case looks correct for solid 14K gold from the 1970's. By that time, Omega was implementing many cost cutting measures and the quality of all watch cases (including Swiss made ones) were being affected.

The only thing wrong that I see with this watch is the price. Should be several hundred less, IMO.

Thank you both for your input! I thought it seemed a bit high for a Seamaster (and a non-chronograph one, at that), which is why I asked before pulling the trigger. I'll keep looking around, and specifically look for a fully-Swiss made one. Thanks again!

Price is a very subjective thing. For example, at $1600 if it is recently serviced with a guarantee from a reputable WM, it's a very fair price.

Opinions are fine. But ask yourself what do you think is fair, and how long are you committed to looking for a better deal? Your time is worth something too. Collectors do this for fun and have no need to buy right away. They can be pickier than a one watch shopper.

I have no connection to this watch, but it looks proper and is a real gold omega case, albeit made in the USA. Nothing wrong with American made omega cases.
