A pretentious, snobby, old fashioned guide to choosing a strap

Thanks for the thoughtful and entertaining guidance.
I have to say I break your rules on a daily basis, with delight and I will stubbornly keep making my own.

I hate my watches:
-dive watches which will never see the ocean on whimsical colorful reptile straps and stingray; you’ll note I’ve killed a python and a crocodile for these;
- bona fide military watches also on reptile straps- the Royal Air Force issued watch from 1942 on matte blue alligator, and the Korean war era Waltham A17 on python— two more reptiles bit the dust;
- another military watch on wild boar;
- dress (gold) watches on goat double wrap, stitched calf and perlon.
I actually have so many watch pictures which break the rules I can’t even get hold of them all.

I do agree however 100% on those primitive two-stitch straps.

Is this your Ferrari?

Not bad, though I could nitpick some of the details. I take issue with the color of the Speedmaster strap. The goal is to complement the dial color, not contrast it. A Speedmaster, therefore, goes on a black strap. Always
In that, I had better change it up then.

Sorry about the colour but I have a thing for brown straps with black dials.

Or just grab whatever strap that’s available now and let the watch do the talking… dress watch on a rubber strap:

You probably wear sneakers to work

We have the same taste in watches, but that's all apparently.

I'm curious about how this combo might be perceived...

I love a 90s chronograph... on a bracelet. Your pilot's watch must be at least 60 years old if you want to wear it on a bund.

Well, I've always liked this combo, two tone stingray or not

It's like you're ashamed of the watch and don't want anyone to notice it!

Your color choice is A+. Thank you for demonstrating that the strap and dial should match, not contrast. Unfortunately the hide is from the wrong animal.

How about this on a NATO? 😝

That is an absolutely beautiful watch! It's so pretty I want to cry. The strap also makes me want to cry... for a different reason.

My nato collection and I feel personally attacked.

Sorry, black racing chronograph = black leather rally strap. At least you matched the colors.

Thoughts on vintage pigskin??

Not bad. The style is right, but I would have gone with a darker brown.
