A pretentious, snobby, old fashioned guide to choosing a strap

So, after a brief holiday with my weirder strap and bracelet selections, here is a rather more conservative one.

1948 Hamilton Turner on a vintage pigskin strap.

I don't know that vintage is a virtue when you're talking about straps. To me it just looks worn and shabby.

An open-ended question....... What are the best recommendations for open ended / Denver straps on fixed spring bars.
Glue, rivet or folding tabs? I have never used them but just cut one off an old watch for a service and dont want to go down a NATO route.

The folding ones are the most convenient and they can hold well. If I were putting a strap on that was never to come off, I would make one and stitch it in place.

Thanks - would be good to know if anyone has a preferred brand (UK supplied)

All the major brands (Hirsch et al) have options, although they're not that plentiful for designs. I had to go the custom route and got Matteo (@torrestraps on IG) to make one for me. He'll make anything you want but also specializes in vintage pairings.

Here's a review that Fratello made.

I am currently on an F- and double F score card. Hoping this brings me up a grade or two….

@tapaptpat and @Braindrain
I ended up with a Hirsch Toronto for now. I will see how that goes and maybe try something more expensive later.
It looks like it has glue (like an envelope kinda). Does that need any activation or will pressing together set it off (being. A newbie at this)
I will post pics when it arrives.
Thanks.

What's going on here? That's not the buckle that came with that watch. Is it even a genuine buckle?

It depends on the strap, but I believe you just press together modern straps.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to hearing how they work out for you!

The strap is a TwoStitch custom that I had made for my BB58 Blue (now sold) and there buckle is from my Omega AD here in Lux so is very much original.

I have been getting straight A’s for being boring as bat poop, so here is my funky offering. Blue dial with a claret leather strap.

Your funky is most folks' conservative. I like that. BTW bat poop is not boring. Haven't you seen Ace Ventura 2?

Don't feel bad, I had to try pretty hard to get below an A.

I'm have always been nervous about these kind of straps, probably for no reason other than if its on an old watch will that fastening be secure if anything should happen.
Fitting a brand new one you can ensure that the straps is secure.

I don't have M.N. For same reason as you.
The Paracord strap interests me but not yet had a proper go I've seen them floating about and listed two DIY knotter/weavers youtube vids. I prefer the Conquistador Paracord for the weave overall.
I also like the no buckle need for the Mad Max style (Adjustable) King Cobra Paracord. Though I think the the strap is two bulky for any of my watches. Moved videos to end of post

Photo or it didn't happen:
Ordered tabletop/farside to ontop
- Perlon
- Kitchener style
- AF 0210 early batch 2 reproduction.
- Start of Conquistador Paracord - but didn't have weavers tools or 95 paracord.

Pics, or you all get Fs by default
- "Unknown fixed bar strap suggestions"

Mad Max style :

So for my first attempt.
Black surround with rose gold indices on a light to dark cream patinated Hobnail dial.
Paired with a "saddle tan" Hirsch.

Looks like a poorly constructed strap, but it's shabbiness compliments the aged, weathered character of the watch.
