No, you’re correct, I don’t. Buy it if you like it.

You can search for ‘hobnail’ in this forum and eBay sold prices to get a ballpark idea

This particular dealer has tried to sell this one for months. Actually, it might well be over a year. There’s a reason why it hasn’t sold in the meantime, even though they’ve tried on various platforms. The price is obscene.

The examples noted above are even black dials. Yes, it’s a hobnail, and believe me I’d like to own it, too - I kinda have a slight weakness for those. But not at that price point.

That being said: They’re not exactly easy to find. I haven’t paid anything near that for any of my examples, but I did invest a lot of time. If you’re impatient and you have the money to spare, with no expectation to get back more than maybe half of it upon a resell then by all means go for it. It’s a nice example.

/edit: Spontaneous group shot of the majority of mine 😁

MtV is our resident expert on these dials. You would be well advised, OP, to follow his advice.

While I appreciate the kind words I’m not sure I could accept them, nevertheless I do think I have a rough idea of the market for those. Up to the OP if he wants to pay that price.

Sorry, Matt, but you own more of them than any other OF member to my knowledge, so I’m afraid that you get stuck with the designated expert title by default. 😁

Most certainly not, but I know an overpriced example when I see one.

Still I doubt you would sell yours for those prices. 😉

In todays market quality costs. Either one waits and hopes to get lucky cheaper or you pay up what it costs. I agree 4k is a lot but on the other hand; where are cheaper ones in good quality? I wouldn’t be surprised if the seller accepted something around 3k. And then we are basically in the range where a dealer still has some room for profit.

That’s always the same with vintage watches.

- Quality
- Availability
- Good Price

Pick two of the above, you almost never get to have all three. If you need it now, you can generally get a quality example but it’ll cost you.
If you’re patient and prepared to do your research you’ll be able to find a quality example at a good price.

Obviously with the OP watch no one has yet decided that balance is worth paying such a premium for.

Thanks, I was just gonna type this exact response.

@PerJ This is also why the question where to find cheaper ones in good quality isn't leading anywhere. The ones that had a reasonable ratio of price and condition were picked up, of course. There are currently a white and a black dial example sitting on C24, both having been available to the market for a year or so. It's up to you what you make of that.

Agreed. So either one pays up or one waits. In this case potential buyers obviously decided for the second option and the seller seems to be happy to do the same. And as we all know most prices on C24 are inflated to cover fees and sometimes also ambitious dreams.

As Davidt says good pieces rarely come up cheap unless you get lucky. 😀
