Another year where Tudor releases are more appealing than Rolex. Take a look at the advertising for the “improvements” for the Air-King:

“We put a 0 in front of the 5.”

Wow. Exciting.

That would make much more sense. Move the date to the bottom, everything is symmetrical and you get the choice of left or right hand versions. They don’t even need new dials or date wheels, just have the cases made so you can mount the movement either way and, when you get the watch, they can rotate the case 180 degrees if you want it backwards.

Are you suggesting that you could insert the stem into either side of the movement?

of course not. I meant being able to rotate the dial on the movement rather than the movement in the case. Case (and movement) rotates 180 degrees but the dial stays oriented as it would normally,

I agree with everyone's sentiment here, it will sell at dizzying levels. If a plastic POS swatch/Speedmaster can create a buzz so can this. Sad to say, this is where we are in the hobby where the big watchmakers can literally attach a movement onto a turd and make it feel 'special'.

Only waking to this and not yet with my coffee, but: plenty of folks have offered a destro, including Rolex SA

Separately, on reflection the teaser video included enough information to deduce this destro introduction. Tony only was the teased watchmaker crown on the left, but the bezel peaking out was showing the font curvature of the 18, not the 6

OK, previously you suggested mounting the movement two different ways, but now you say the dial. However, it seems to me that if the dial is rotated 180 degree with respect to the movement, the date window will no longer be aligned to display the date wheel properly.

Weird, just weird. But as others have said, Rolex is a brand that has such a commanding name that they can do anything they want and the market will come to them.

I’m no watch maker so I’m most likely talking bollocks but isn’t the date wheel basically a circle? Whether the window is on the left or right shouldn’t matter as it’s the same distance from the middle of the watch (and therefore the date wheel). Crystal would also need to move so the cyclops is on the right side of course.

Now that I’ve perused, I’m gonna come out and say it:

I like the Rolex-green and black motif, and although I’m not left handed I like the idea of a destro sports/dive watch even for right-handers

my modest like for this GMT is separate from a more generalized disappointment in Rolex’s continued boringness this year, especially on the 10 year anniversary of the most innovative watch they’ve made in decades (and, for me, highly innovative amongst any other manufacturer)

Wearing the SkyDweller today, in defiance

I'd buy Sky Dweller in a New York minute if I could get one within 10% of what Rolex says their MSRP is. But at an ask that seems to exceed cost + 25% and up, I will wait for the market to mediate before bringing one into my stable. Until then this will have to do...

I think that it was a pretty interesting addition to the GMT series (even though I am not a fan of the green color) and also in general quite unexpected. Compared to the previous years' subtle releases I like it more!

Which color dial would you go for?

Looks like @cvalue13 got himself the black one… any comments from your side?

I was always tempted by the white dial… but am unsure about readability.

I like the black, white, champagne or blue. Oystersteel & Yellow/White gold. I really am not that picky. I appreciate the complication that Rolex implemented.

If it was the champagne version I would probably put an aftermarket strap on it (RubberB or another), that version with the bracelet is a little too much gold colour for me 😁

I was involved with a miracle and indeed got a black dial when the SS version released.

Im not a big Rolex head, and the SkyDweller was my first and for a long time only Rolex.

But I absolutely love the SkyDweller, primarily from the ingenuity and UX angle. There really isn’t another experience like the “command bezel,” and it’s so impressive having such an inordinately easy, fun, way to control a watch that is both an annual calendar and GMT.

A few biases to admit:

first, I have a thing for GMT/dual-time complications

second, I have good sized, nearly 8”, wrists

The SD is a large watch. At 42mm X 14mm tall, it’s my largest modern watch (have some larger 1970’s omegas 😗). I prefer smaller all-else-equal, but with larger wrists it still works for me.

One potential reservation: the white gold fluted bezel plus the polished surfaces make this thing a disco-ball. I like the the flash, but admit to being self-conscious of it at times.

If I had smaller wrists, or a greater aversion to some bling, I’d definitely recommend a test-wear before pulling the trigger (recognizing the potential impossibility of that).

More generally, and given today’s events, I find the SkyDweller to be such an interesting and impressive flex of ingenuity and invention from a company that otherwise has so little interest in those topics. I would love to know the inside story of how this watch got “ok’d” internally.

And this is why I only really ever buy or aspire to buy GMT, Worldtimer or Dual-time time pieces (I have absolutely no desire to buy a chronograph, unless it has a GMT function, and I have that addressed quite well already). I guess it scratches the wanderlust in my heart, though we are to scratch that itch plenty through upcoming travel.
