I don´t think that the holes are a big problem. You will need someone knowing how to use a laser welding device. He will fill up the holes and give the lugs a very light and sensitive polish to hide the marks of the operation. Not expensive (at least in Germany).

Your dibs are duly noted. Truly ... I have a spreadsheet. :)

As you can imagine, I was aware of the holes and engraving, and some case restoration was baked into the deal in my mind, along with movement repairs ... even a new crystal. ;-)

In the big picture, the case restoration isn't such a concern, as @minutenrohr noted, since it's a (Rumsfeld) known known and costs aren't outrageous. Of greater concern are the known unknowns, such as why the movement isn't working, and whether parts will be available. And of course, there are always those nasty unknown unknowns. </fingers-crossed>

But these are the things that make watches fun.

beautiful original patinated watch in a lovely small case. As we can see the crown was replaced to an original one! What are your estimations how much will it make?

I believe that this exact watch was discussed a while back when it was on eBay. A number of hands appear questionable, as does the dial signature. Not one I would recommend.

Unfortunately, this fact does nothing to guarantee the authenticity of the watch.

Here are the pertinent facts, as I see them:

The handset is not consistent with other examples from the period.
The dial signature is not consistent with other examples from the period.
Numerous examples of this exact dial can be found without a signature/sterile.

My belief is that the original dial was replaced with a generic one for the Val. 22GH, and a Longines signature was poorly applied. The dubious handset supports this belief as it indicates that the watch has undergone alterations, which were not in keeping with the original design.

Thank you dirty dozen! Very appreciated. If this is the truth i would obviously not recommend the watch either. Nor I nor the owner were aware that this watch was extensively discussed previously - and he was a bit shocked about this. The owner bought it on Ebay and the seller guaranteed the dial to be original... However the current owner decided not to sell it, He will have it examined in St. Imier and he will let us know about the result.

As you and I both know, this means absolutely nothing. Not sure why you are deleting your posts but it does not present well.

Well of course if everybody keeps posting live auctions they are bound to become hilarious one way or another.
I sure am glad I'm not buying chronographs. I certainly would not be laughing if people were posting an auction I'm targetting.

On the other hand this is a completed auction.... has it been discussed before somewhere around here?
