There is a frenzy out there right now- it’s really disturbing. A little while ago, someone send me an unsolicited PM offer for my GMT over at TRF- they has seen a pic I had posted. I politely declined saying it wasn’t for sale and he got very offended- he was offering top dollar and I would be lucky to be offered more since mine wasn’t perfect....so now he was insulting my watch...which wasn’t for sale- in an effort to try and buy it.

Yep - I've had not one but two people tell me I was 'lucky' to get their offers for...etc, etc, etc (perceived faults of the piece/s I was letting go)...shockingly, I still managed to find an agreeable offer with someone else.

One of the aforementioned even had enough dedicated belief to message me after that one went saying "I bet you wish we'd done a deal, hm?"....No, no, random wannabe-influencer person, I am still quite glad we did not. ::facepalm1::

Probably employs a similar tactic with the ladies when closing time is nearing.

At least on OF, people have the decency to tell you your watch is shit publicly 😉

So in other circles things are boooooooming (if you read the text). Good on him, have only heard good things about this gent...

Can someone Tell me if that Tiffany print is genuine, please?

MRC MRC
There's a lot of British cast iron under that bonnet....

And Dell'Ortos? What's wrong with 3 S.U.s?

Only three chokes on an SU setup.
Six on dellortos and a better flow

Then you would have loved the roached out Tudor sub that cleared over 100k a few years ago. I don’t get it either.

That story sort of points to guys who thought they could actually quit their day jobs to flip vintage watches.

Well, this kind of speaks to the point of this thread- those that will tear apart a watch when they want to buy, but extol it’s virtues when it comes to time to sell. There is always a divide on the value of a watch depending on what end of the deal you reside.

I think also there is also the reality that there is a finite number of good vintage pieces and too many dealers.

Yeah, totally, gets noobs all the time because they haven’t seen both sides yet. Although the guys that do it privately are the worst, like in the example shared earlier.

Negging is such a despicable tactic.

And the hype around even contemporary pieces that creates insane 'mini bubbles' doesn't help either - Hodinkee L.E. models and the 'Tiffany' blue Rolex OP of recent release come to mind - I like Rolex and can openly say so, but 15k for an Oyster Perpetual on the secondary market? Potent stuff, whatever it is the people spending that kind of money on those watches must be smoking!

Everything said is true. But this thread is starting to feel like a downer.

On a more positive note, as long as @dsio and @Trev don't shut us down, vintage watches will survive. You all are awesome and keep it fun.

Well then here is a downer for you-

Bought it in 2002 for $12.5k, sold it in 2008 (not my choice) for $18k, couldn’t buy it now for $40k...it’s not just watches that are out of control. I feel like the days of the hobbiest are dead it’s all about money now....it’s sapped the fun out of all of it.

Disagree. It HAS gotten too pricey and insane putting such beauties out of reach. But there is a lot of interesting stuff around.

One of the most fun cars i ever owned was a Renault Caravelle. Rare as hen's teeth but still cheap. People driving past me would stop their car to stare at it. But as rare as it was, it wasn't expensive. Point being when stuff gets crazy expensive we have to find something else.

That is an awesome car. First time i saw one was a 3.0 csl that was owned by a dad in my daughter's crew team. It had lines i had never seen before. Just gorgeous. There were about two seconds when it was affordable and then it just went crazy.

You have good taste. That is no doubt a tough memory. Guessing a ragtop 64 Vw bug doesn't interest you?

The part about moving downstream I totally agree with. You are right, when I found myself priced out of Rolex and Omega, I moved on to Zoidac and Bulova, 40’s chrono’s, 60’s divers. Part of my joy in the bargain thread is sharing the love of hunting down these types of watches- the ones that typically get overlooked for bigger game- but have their own merits. Yes, there is still fun in the hobby, we just need to be more creative and broaden our horizons.

And 64 Bug huh....hmmmmm

Back to the original topic of this thread. I have a slightly different view as to where the market is heading. As others have suggested before, I also think it is indeed showing higher quality pieces continuing to trade at premium prices and in the case of Speedmasters; slightly younger vintages.

As a case in point, I have been searching for a (very) good, originals 80s Speedmaster and am also on the hunt for an early 90s Tritium specimen. So far, both to no avail as there is simply very little on offer, or at simply crazy asking prices. Good quality early 145.022-69s and 145.022-71's have not been found too often either. Additionally, Brexit and travel restrictions have made watch trading in Europe a little harder too, now that both the EU-market as well as the British market have all of a sudden shrunk, in a sense that hefty import taxes and VAT apply ... Perhaps I am a little too picky as a buyer and in that sense representative for the market we are reflecting upon here.

On the selling side. I have sold a few high quality Speedmasters recently. Some without even having to list them and this at prices very much in line with the Speedmaster101 price chart, which is not quite showing much of a price decline on the bulk of good to excellent vintages...

In short; let the searches continue. There really is demand, but where are the (younger) specimen we are looking for? Well, at least I am. 😁
