All- Given all the recent pricing discussion, I thought I would post some of the select results from the November Antiquorum auction in Geneva. Results are obviously influenced by the differences in condition of the pieces and vagaries of the auction market; but you will note how particularly variant this shows up in a few of the A385 examples sold. I am listing below the hammer price in Swiss francs (CHF) all of which are subject to a further 25% fee. Lot 43 - G383 - Poker Chip Dial - CHF 4800 Lot 72. Defy - Blue Dial (Good Ex.) - CHF 2200 Lot 74 A385 with Ladder bracelet and box - CHF 9500 (One note/question I have is that the box is purportedly original, but has the inverted star. Same with the crown, which I would assume to be a service crown. Appreciate folks thoughts if these are truly original to the watch. I would think both to be dated later). Lot 75 A385 (Brown/Khaki Dial) - No ladder b - CHF 3800 Lot 231 -CP-2- A.Cairelli - CHF 10,000 Lot 250 A783 - CHF 3000 Lot 251 Espada, 2nd Series, Sub Sea, 01.0040.418 - CHF 4000 Lot 252 - A385 - (Green/Smoke Dial) - No Ladder bracelet- CHF 6500 Lot 253 -A384 - No ladder bracelet- CHF 4800 Best, M
On Sunday, I was conected almost all day to the auction. in my opinion, most of the zenith watches keep under-rated prices, compared with other brands. I can’t stop thinning in the sellers, considering they will receive hammer price reduced by auction house fee (12%? 20%?). I was tempted to to bid for the poker chip (considering a not excellent condition), and the A384... but no way, only a single picture for a vintage piece? I am still surprised by a low profile expert on the analysis of the watch, and not the necessary pictures ...
FYI, there are some ZE end links for sale on the Forum (in watch parts) by M Neumann as well as on CT. M
Sorry, posted the above-message in the wrong thread. Obviously, too late for me.... Yes, you really need to know your subject matter well when purchasing at auction. As an FYI, when interested in a piece, you can often get the auction house to get you more photos or specific info if you reach out ahead of time. Lastly, I can understand your interest in the g383. While the dial was in far from perfect condition, the watch looked honest and I do not think you will find another at such a good price... Hopefully, it will show up in the Forum and we can get a better look at it.... M
I agree that the Defy was a little high, but it was a very clean example - all around. At auction (particularly at the more established houses selling vintage watches), i find that watches in excellent condition often attract a premium, while those in less good condition lag. I think this is what we saw here. M
While we are talking auction results, results from a few Zenith pieces from Antiquorum’s November 29, 2020 Honk Kong Auction auction are below. A277 (Sold Without reserve) - 19,000 HKD (U.S.$2,452) - Notes - Polished case, dial in subpar condition, new hands, original crown, ZF end links, non-ladder bracelet. 3. 18K Movado Astronic HS triple calendar chronograph, gold dial, 18k lobster bracelet - Passed. - Asking 90,000 HKD ($11,612). At auctions, you often have crappy items in terrible condition, that is why I never bought anything at auctions.
