YouTube Rabbit Holes

I'm so conflicted right now...

On the one hand, no regret using YouTube to help arrive at a decision -- recently, to pick up a pair of Red Wing boots (Iron Rangers, FWIW... still breaking them in around the house... just add autumn, and I'm set.)

But on the other hand... damn... there are so many really good boot review channels, which leads down the leather shoe/boot care videos, and so on. I'm so not that guy... but, turns out... I'm that guy!

Any rabbit holes you never imagined you'd be down?
Bought a pair of Redwing Classic Mocs earlier this year. I anticipated the “break in” would take longer, two days and they were perfect. I wear them 3-4 days a week. Enjoy them!

I don’t understand how this is done, but the results are never short of breathtaking. (They take old footage and somehow up-sample it to 4k 60fps, colorize it and add sound effects.)

Very much like the documentary using restored WWI footage "They Shall Not Grow Old." It is a lot of computer work.

Have to add this

https://youtube.com/c/SubBrief

Just finished watching an episode about a young Soviet man who bravely lost his life averting a nuclear meltdown by volunteering to go into the reactor room of a sub and hit the stuck control rods with a hammer to drop them into place, after watching the history of the echo II class subs and how almost all of them had near meltdowns or reactor failures leading to crew irradiation regularly, or how a brainless skipper fired his trash out a torpedo tube only for it to backfire and damage his own sub.

How humanity survived the Cold War is kind of a miracle really

There are some pretty good mountain bike riding YouTube rabbit holes out there. I really like the nail biters where the guys ride down the spines of the mountains.

Safir makes good products for finer leathers (some of my whites are calf), and Bicks is good for work boots of thicker leathers. I believe Allen Edmonds has their branded stuff made by safir and are cheaper for the most part- good creams and waxes. I used to get them at Nordstrom with my points and their shoe trees as well when they have them in their sales. Sierra Trading also sells cedar trees reasonably.
Did someone say Safir?

Deep into the youtube rabbit hole of knives in 2021 (mostly metal complex). Learned a lot. Bought even more.
Spyderco, Benchmade, Chris Reeve, Hinderer, Aliexpress crap
Now slowly selling to buy watches I don't need. (except my hinderer and smock and GB2, those are keepers)

You can achieve that result with one winter season of salt stains here on the east coast! 😉

When I was dating my wife in '83 I would fly to NYC from LA..... in the winter, with dress shoes. Learned a lesson. 🤦

That's exactly what I thought it was until I read the title of the video...

BTW back in the day that polish would not have passed inspection...they would tell to go back and finish the rest of the boot.

I have a little sling sack I carry my work shoes in and tuck my dress pants into my Sorel’s on the way to work (the made in Canada ones, not China). I can stand in shin high gutter slush and not care wearing those.
