It’s a stunner. I actually love this era is Speedmaster’s which I think of as the “common years”. They don’t have the cache of the pre-‘69, but are every much a heritage piece that ran for almost 2 decades unchanged (over 2 decades??). These are the Speedy’s we common folks can have and love

That was the appeal of the -74 originally...beautiful aging but not monumental cost. But it still feels like an important purchase.

The Dial on the one listed here is near perfection IMO, perfect light yellow lume, not horribly faded, instantly readable, not moldy indices-this is a lifetime daily wear, not a safe queen or hipster patina junkie special.
As I said, I have nothing but love for this watch and don’t even know the owner

I'm sorry havn't seen this in the advertisment. Same seller is just offering a 69 with wrong bezel, discription is: "Original Omega steel bezel." Yes it is, but from a later Speedmaster....

I noticed that after buying the first one... made me think the first one was not such a good idea... 😕

Was talking with him about it...then of course it sells literally 10 minutes after I got a response on my first question... you could say I’m 0/2 🤦

Damn man! Trust me, another will come along soon....and the correct birth year! The watch Karma gods owe you the next one. Plus during this time that you are being patient you can research and hone your skills at finding the right one.
But, don’t get distracted from your goal and save your pennies. I keep getting distracted...my “next” watch was supposed to be a ‘72 (birth year) slate dialed 1603 Rolex Datejust...there is one sitting at HQ Milton right now...but then I bought a Seamaster /Speedmaster Companion, and an Airking, and now a fellow member I pinged about his Connie a few weeks ago is getting it back from service and ready to sell...too many distractions!!!

Hear you man...trying to keep the momentum on the Speedy train

Just be patient and stay away from eBay unless you really know what you are looking at, there are too many dogs out there and this is real money.

If you're that picky about a 145.022 -74 with a polished lug, you wouldn't like mine which is not over-polished but has a noticeable dent on the tip of the 11 o'clock lug 😲

Not that I'm selling it or anything...

Dents are much better than a ham-fisted polishing job that completely changes the shape of the watch IMO. Still a nice looking piece with the dent

Thanks. The old man whom I bought it from was the original owner, and it sat in a drawer for 30 years before he sold it to me. He's not sure that he ever had it polished, he says he just wore it every day for 5 or 6 years and then put it away. It still has a lot of the original finish, and that little bit of extra history, although he couldn't remember how he'd dinged it.

I had it serviced in Summer 2014 and it was running +2.5 sec/day before it settled down to within 1 sec/day. In 2016 it was running anywhere between -0.1 sec/day over a 2 week period to +1.1 sec/day over 9 days when I last tested it. It actually keeps better time than my COSC Planet Ocean 9300 or Planet Ocean 8500.

It's been 5 years since that service, but to avoid wearing out parts I retired it to the safe 4 years after the service, until I could get it serviced this summer. Didn't want to have to score parts for an 861 on top of the COA.

Agreed, dings are fine- part of life. Overzealous with a wheel-bad.

They are classics-and imo the best looking DJ’s made. They are double what they were 10 years ago, but not crazy yet like the rest of the Rolex line.

You are winding it once a month until it goes for service though?

That story is worth its weight in gold and more than compensated for a ding!

It's been 4yr 10 mo since last service, and I don't think that I've wound and worn it since last summer, after I bought a 3570.50 and a 3572.50 to wear that spring.

Do you really think that a service is necessary if the watch was worn for only 3 years and the gear values are still so good?
