One of two, today. I had a call from someone (hobby railroader) who wants a genuine antique pocket watch with a 24-hour dial. I collect pocket watches, and rarely do I sell one of my collectibles. I went to my stash of project watches/parts watches/bits and pieces, and came up with a 1911 Elgin. Stem wound, stem set, 15-jewels, 18-size, Breguet hairspring, nice vitreous enamel dial. All there, but needed work. Because the vitreous enamel dial is perfect (the case less so), I decided to service it. It needed:
-Balance staff (I had a genuine NOS staff). I’ve had that staff for decades. Price on the original envelope? 40 cents.
-Foot hole jewel (I had a genuine NOS jewel in setting).
-Mainspring (I had a genuine NOS spring).
-GLASS crystal (I had one).
-Seconds hand (I had one).
Parts fitted, and reconditioned, rough case (brass showing) cleaned up, and voila! Now, will I have a customer for it, or not? If I don’t sell it, I’ll fit it into a better case, and add it to my collection.
