After days of wearing larger chronographs- I get the urge to wear a small manual. On those days I always seem to grab my old Gruen "Driver's" watch. Anyone one else also into smaller movement watches from the '30s and '40s?
Hanging out with @ChuckMK23 and our modern Speedy Gonzales Moonwatches at DD today...and prepping for Speedy Tuesday tomorrow...
Until you posted yours, today, I had only ever seen one of this “driver’s” model with the articulated lugs. Mine! From an era of Armstrong steering and plan ahead braking. Nice watch! Mine says hello.
This past weekend I did a bit of light rock climbing with the family and my Turtle: Today it’s back to being a keyboard warrior with my Speedy:
Now yours is the second one I have ever seen and yours is in beautiful condition--Thanks for posting-- This is one of my go-to watches.
Mine was originally owned by a former managing director of Rolex in Canada. It has never been used, being what was called a “live sample”. This fellow was the head of the Canadian branch of Gruen, up until the company was dissolved, and began marketing generic Swiss (non-Gruen) watches. When he left Gruen, he started with Rolex. Rolex and Gruen had a close working relationship over decades. They shared many movements in their various models. Many movements that were produced for them by the Swiss watchmaker, Aegler. I believe Aegler May have been jointly owned by the two companies, jointly. I worked for a Rolex dealer up until 30 years ago. When the then managing director of Rolex in Canada found out that I was a collector, he gave me two NOS Gruens, including the driver’s watch. I sent him a 26 of Johnnie Walker Black Label, and he was furious with me!
