Cool micro brand Aramar Watches Long Beach Racing Chronograph -ST-019 (based off the Venus 175). Great looking & wearable piece at 38mm when vintage may not be practical.

A friend of mine is into the history of fashion, he says that the vest as an item of men's fashionable clothing was kept alive by the need for a pocket for the watch and was killed off by the wrist watch. He's a weird dude who still wears a vest (and a pre WWI Waltham Vanguard) but I found that tidbit interesting anyway.

In honour of that morsel of useless intel I'll post a gratuitous porn shot of one of my Illinois RR watches.... just to get @Mad Dog 's goat!
(actually I'm jealous as hell of that Veritas he posted. friggin Elgin POS... so I feel the need to get back!)

When I got this serviced recently the watchmaker hauled me into the back of the shop to show me the thing running on his machine.... he just couldn't get over how flat the line was and how accurate the watch.

I recently read in Britten’s English watch and clock makers, that circa 1675, King Charles II of Great Britain, instructed his tailor to make him a waistcoat (vest) with pockets in it. Men’s clothing of the era (apparently) didn’t have pockets. King Charles had a watch which he had carried in a velvet pouch, worn around his neck. He was tired of carrying it that way. A fashion forerunner, apparently. Philomon Robertet, treasurer for 5 French kings during the 16th century was a watch collector. When he died, he left (IIRC) about 12 watches to his wife. Rumour has it she spent the rest of her life winding up the estate. 😀

Edited to correct Robertet’s first name. It was Philomon. Not that it matters much, I guess.
