decided to switch gears w/one smooth rum from Venezuela..Botucal, also labeled as Diplomático.. excellent sipping rum while attending the surf and turf on the grill... TGIF!
Copperworks single malt, release 011. A LOT smoother than previous releases - given the aging in oak barrels it tastes like a 50/50 scotch-bourbon hybrid. And even at 98 proof it’s almost smooth enough to take without a few drops of water - almost.

Strong choice sir! I go a tad lighter on the creme de violete and get a nice sky blue color. Ends up a hair less sweet, but anyway you make it, it’s a killer almost lost to history cocktail.
Never heard of this cocktail but definitely going to try it. Not big on sweet drinks so I'll go easy on the creme de violet or just eliminate it all together
The violete is defining for it... although many recipes omit it as it was unavailable for years , I argue it’s a different drink without it. But as I’m writing in my cocktail book Experiment! Have fun!!
My Bible is "Old Man Drinks" I too just made annotations. My wife and I prefer less sweet. Exception is the Negroni.
Which Violette are you using? I use a brand called Tempus Fugit - the only one I can find up by me other than Rothman and Winter. I have had the cocktail with Giffard and Benoit Serres, and prefer both. Also, though the recipe calls for Plymouth gin, I prefer it with a more botanical, modern gin like Green Hat, Karner Blue, or Bluecoat. My recipe is as follows: - 2 oz gin - 1/2 oz lemon - 1/2 oz Maraschino - 1/3 oz violette Sometimes, when I'm misbehaving, I'll add some violette to a French 75 as well.
