Driving duty on Thursday.... so just tried a small glass of Cambridge 3.8% bitter which is not a usual tipple - very nice / well kept beer.

Last night we had some Barking Squirrel with our dinner...

But upon surveying the beer fridge, it was evident that we needed to stock up. So I also thought I should take a look at the spirits as well. Good for gin, vodka, etc., but Scotch wise we were low. I have a Bowmore 15 yo that I'm about half done, and other than that, this is what was in the cupboard so very bare compared to what it normally is:

I had one of those tubes with what I thought was a full bottle of Laphroaig 10 yo (a staple in my house), but was very disappointed to pull that out and find the bottle completely empty! Not sure why that was in the cupboard, but anyway we made a trip...

My wife's car...mine's much cleaner than that! Bunch of white wines, sherry for cooking, plus a number of beers, so Guinness, 1664, Shock Top, Hoegaarden, Belgian Moon Mango for my wife, and I have a few of these cooling off in the fridge for later today:

Hope it's good, and as a Rush fan I just had to try it, but it's been tough to get ahold of!

Some additional Scotch...

My wife really likes the Glenlevet, and I don't mind it when I want something simple, so we got the 1750 ml bottle (first had this when someone gave me a bottle as a gift). Couldn't find the Laphroaig 10 yo near us, so I opted for the 1/4 cask, which I've had before and enjoy. Took a flyer on the Arberlour, and the reviews I read seemed good as well as the tasting notes, so may try some of that this evening. Guessing it will need a few drops of water to open it up...

^ all of that looks delicious, I just finished a Glenlivet 14 the other day that I’ve been nursing a few months.

Nice selection of Scotch! I prefer the QC over the standard Laphroaig 10yo, the extra ABV really helps. Haven't had A'bunadh in a while so it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

A'Bunadh is one of my favorites, there is some variance between batches. As its ABV is very very high, water will help. I suggest without water at first if you can handle a 60.2 abv.

Something little different tonight: Millstone Dutch rye. Interesting concept but unfortunately quite unbalanced. Spiciness is way out of control, just burning the palate. Long bitter coffee like aftertaste. However not all is lost as I've found out it makes a nice autumny cocktail when mixed with high quality, locally sourced apple juice.

I always try them neat first. I’ve drank absinthe neat, so I think I can handle only 60%...😉

My father in law texted last week looking for my order when he visits next month. They drive through New Hampshire, stocking up on discounted scotch is always a solid plan.

Not really a warning for you 😀 . I’ve busted that out for some people and they found it un-drinkable without water, and they where self identified spirit lovers….

So, my verdict on the Rush beer...

Thankfully it's not hopped to death like a lot of craft brews are, so that was good. The thing is there is a fairly strong rye flavour in this beer, and as un-Canadian as it may sound, I hate rye whisky. It was okay at the start of the glass, but by the end I wasn't really enjoying it much. This will fall into the novelty beer area for me, and certainly won't be a regular of mine. If you like rye, then you would probably like this though.

Cheers, Al

I went to the local liquor store today and picked up a couple bottles of port. Usually I buy LBVs but these looked to tempting to pass up.

Cracked open this Corzes Hermitage after some gardening work this week (hence the G-Shock). It has gone down very well and we finished it off last night with a steak. I think I will invest in some more / very nice Shiraz.

2X Glenmorangie. Both offer a good dessert whisky experience with lots of fruity notes, but I think the Milsean is overpriced at +100€. The Nectar d'Or is more interesting and half the price.

While doing some rearranging in a cupboard recently, I came across this - remnants of some 18 yo in a fancy porcelain bottle:

I probably bought this back in the early to mid-90's maybe? Can't recall specifically, but there wasn't a lot left in it. Of course when I tried to remove the very fancy stopper, the cork split:

Managed to get it out without breaking into a million pieces, but the Scotch itself was dark and very cloudy...thankfully not a lot left (maybe 1/2 ounce at most). So this is what I wasn't drinking...it went down the drain.

This new batch of Springbank 10 is phenomenal. I highly recommend it if you can find it for a reasonable price.
