I love “odd” wine made from lesser known grape varities or grapes not normally grown in a particular area. Some of this wine can be really bad but often it’s quite good and/or exciting, as the poorer winemakers often stay with the easy to make stuff.

This wine was made as part of a Master’s thesis proving that you could make a great white wine from Cabernet Sauvignon... in Pfalz.

It just love this and as soon as I get home, I am getting some more 😀

Looks like a heavy hitter. How was it? I have a love/hate relationship with Pinotage.

Indeed. Pinotage can be a finicky grape. Sometimes it's magnificent, and other times, it tastes like a bad combination of acetone and over-ripe banana.

The Vriesenhof is a good, but not great, pinotage. Rich, but with pronounced smoke flavors, as 2017 was a drought (and fire) vintage.

For my money, the consistently best South African pinotage, year-in and year-out, comes from Kanonkop. Cape Chamonix also makes an interesting pinotage using the appassimento method to partially dry the pinotage grapes before pressing them.

Thanks. Good to know 😀 Always nice with some real local insight.

Made it out on Tuesday for a nice Lunch … why does Peroni taste better when served by someone who is Italian … but it did and it went down well in the Sunshine.

A vibrant and imposing sweet potato shochu. Most shochu is bottled between 20-25 abv. This one is bottled at 44 abv.

Had to approach it mizuwari style to tamp down its savagery and it is delicious.

Given the name, is it like soju in Korea? (from a high-level, like "wine" is similar to wine I mean)

1st time we ordered soju during holidays with friends we did not knew what is was and thought it was rice beer or something similar. We ordered one 12oz bottle each. 2min later a person came to ask for confirmation (showing 3 fingers and looking weird at us). Not speaking korean and the person speaking only korean, we confidently confirmed 3 bottles for 3 people. We were a bit surprised when, when they came back with the bottles, they brought shooters instead of beer glasses... Hopefully it was only 20abv and not 40, but it was still a nice 1st afternoon in Korea 😁
