Enjoying a delightful jalapeño margarita....with a Swiss made, Mexico assembled Sidney Steele.

S. Steele was an enterprising Texan who worked for a Texas jeweler in the 1920s. It came to his attention that Bulova hadn’t registered its trademark in Mexico. The young man registered “Bulova”, and began marketing his own “Bulova” watches in Mexico....they had no relationship to genuine Bulova models.

Bulova sued him in US courts in the 1950s. The matter went to the Supreme Court, and Bulova lost.

S. Steele also started a namesake company (Sidney) in Mexico assembling watches from Swiss and US components. The pictured watch is supposedly “Swiss Made”.

I am looking for a “Steele” Bulova to add to my collection....anyone on OF have a Steele “Bulova”? Let’s see it.

Last night actually. Drank it with a roast chicken glazed with a paste of herbs de provence, white pepper, coleman's mustard powder, fresh garlic, lemon and olive oil.

With all the trolling going on across OF, I am retreating to the booze and pets threads for some relief. Such happy places.

Tonight, a Scotch I can always go to, and a brownish 145.022-69. If this is really a "limited edition", I may stock up on a few bottles, since it's a really good value at my local store.

Great pic!

I had a beer called Crop Duster. A rather robust IPA... Seem to have deleted the picture I took of the can :'(

Still at my son’s with the new baby, any excuse for a scotch!

I’ve not come across this one before but it is a very smooth and warming tipple.

It is a 1960’s Aquaplunge, the brand was established in the late 1800’s ... uk was a big market for them ... I think the brand dies during the quartz shock era ... but the brand name has been resurrected in the recent past ... with little reference to the original styling cues or production values of the brand in its original incarnation

Last night we went to the home of my son's 11-year old friend for a birthday party, and let me say this: Romanians really know how to throw a birthday party for kids, because they include the parents in the process.

We ate well, but drank even better. Romanians know their fruit liquors, and because many are simply not sold here in the US, are good at moonshining. We had three kinds of homemade plum brandy, and a sour cherry liquor they call Visinata--. Wicked stuff, one of them, called Tuica, could have stripped layers of paint off a picnic table--but the plum brandy labeled (with a piece of masking tape) "Plum Tails" was pretty good--it may have been mislabeled, it tasted more like Calvados or Applejack.

Fun night. Frontal lobes are paying for it dearly this morning. Ohhhhhhhhhh!

Tails add flavour and texture and complexity ... some distillers use heads and tails for redials I’ll action, adding complexity (if long ageing in barrel is to follow distillation) or for burning weeds... heads contain poisons which can kill or lead to blindness ... tails are pretty safe...

I have just finished selections for this years official Royal Adelaide Wine Show Dozen- lots of tasting and some cracking wines... (only 152 gold medals awarded from over 2500 submitted) ... about half this years dozen are unicorns (trophy winners), most of the rest top gold winners in their class... the official doz will be launched in a week or 2... so am celebrating by drinking the best blend I’ve had this year ... from the Barossa ... bottle 231 of 3000, most of which goes overseas... I managed to snag 150 bottles... rrp about $250, can do mates rates for any Aussie based forumisters ... likely to be around $100 ...

Cheers

Matt
