Would I be happy with this ?

Hello dear Omegaforum, first off I want to say that I think this place is awesome for a beginner like me and that everyone is very helpful 😀 !
I saw this watch on the private sales forum: https://omegaforums.net/threads/reduced-pair-of-seamaster-quartz-pie-pans-mint-condition.151271/ and wondered if this would be a good first Omega? Since I am a Stundent I don’t have a lot of money and can’t afford a service or something at the moment. But since this has a quartz movement, shouldn’t it run a lot better ? Would I be able to buy this and just be happy? Is that possible with any vintage watch in that range ?
Thanks a lot
Greetings
Leo

You need to decide what appeals to you. With a $1000 budget, you have a lot of choices.

My budget is around 500-600€ I would only purchase one of them.

If it were me And I was worried about the cost of maintenance I would purchase a new watch of another make and wait until I could afford the Omega I really want for later when I was through the lean student years. A new Bulova or Seiko would get you through these years with little or no added expense whereas any old watch, even a quartz, carries with it the possibility of a costly service. While quartz watches are extremely reliable there is the issue of age. Time can be harder on some electronic components than on metals, resins in coils can break down and plastics can degrade leading to the need to find replacement parts which can be hard to find for 40 year old electronic watches. I have an Accutron divers watch from 1980 I purchase as NOS and have had to had it serviced to replaced components which aged poorly just sitting on a shelf in the back of the jewellers. My watchmaker told me the movement may not last much longer as spares for that movement are hard to find and even the few spares that are available for that movement are old and degraded.

Beauty of a Omega on a budget. In my opinion a great start to a young watch aficionado.

Great seller and a quality watch.

No $5-600 vintage watch is going to be as nice as these.

If you want to have a vintage look without the downsides of vintage, there are a lot of options like Baltic, Hamilton, Seiko, Victorinox, Bulova,Timex……Personally remembering my younger self, I was very hard on watches. I was a Seiko quartz user back then.

Got it. I do think that quartz watches will generally carry on without service better than mechanical watches, but as they age, they can also have problems. If you really want something trouble-free, a modern vintage-look watch would be a good choice, as @Larry S recommended.

Totally agree. To add to the list of potential vintage inspired companies: Furlan marri, Dan Henry, Zentier.

If you get vintage, you will almost always have to contend with servicing etc, regardless of movement.
