With increased local armed robberies, I’m no longer wearing Rolexes

Thankfully I don't look like the kind of guy who has any money. I look more like the guy who would ask for money.

It’s been a blazingly hot summer here. Perhaps my Speedmaster and Tudor GMT sit at the kids’ table while Subs, Daytonas and SDs occupy the gilded seats, yet I had no fear of wearing them both in shortsleeves, tank tops and dress shirts. Besides, should the unthinkable happen, I could always swing the oft-maligned slab sided GMT at the head of the perp. That’ll learn’em.

If someone is ready and willing to mug me for my watch I'm pulling out my blade, even for the $800 Seamaster. It's the hill I will die on. The attitude of "Live to fight another day" just doesn't resonate here. Just laying down to get raped for your possessions is an unappealing way to live. What happens when you give up the Sub and they say, "And now your daughter..."

Don't have a daughter, so they are out of luck! 😉

May be time to up the subscription to tier 2 and set his title to “Not intentionally condescending”.

"Intentionally condescended to" could do just as well.

How many times have we heard about people posting their vacation pics and having their homes burglarized while they are gone? Wait until you are back home before you post on Instagram. Also don’t tag your location like PnB Rock’s gf did. 🤦

I just tell would be muggers that I work for the government. That disgusts them enough that they just move on - probably assuming that my Omega is fake. Even thieves have standards you know.

I know they are plentiful, but I honestly enjoy reading these types of threads initially. It’s interesting hearing how other collectors react to the potential dangers that exist in our hobby, and I can usually empathize with the disappointment people experience when they don’t feel secure wearing some of their favorite watches in public.

The conversation often takes a predictable turn, and there are a bunch of tiresome posts, so I skip ahead a few pages until I see a snorkel or cat.

In the context of safety, I’m comforted by the fact that bubbles burst and thieves will be on to the next hot commodity by the time my son is out of diapers. Of course there’s always the risk of falling victim to random crime as many have stated, but statistically, considering the number of people that inhabit cities every day, there’s probably a similar likelihood that you’ll get bitten by a shark while swimming in the ocean compared to being mugged for your Rolex. And I love swimming in the ocean.

Someone earlier mentioned the guys who wear fakes being in danger. I was on Reddit earlier looking at the carnage in the market today read what the “smart” people are saying and in my feed a young guy from London had got held up by gun for his fake Rolex. Apparently he tried telling the thief it was a fake the thief did not care “or believe” and the guy lost his 250 dollar Daytona. Oh well damn imagine some poor Joe getting shot for a fake, what a way to go.

Well, sadly (or tragically I should say!), it happened in the Netherlands

Funny, I went through the airport in Amsterdam last week. I spent some quality time at the Swiss watch store there, as they were kind enough to get a broken spring bar replaced for me while I was on layover. The person helping me enjoyed seeing my Nivada Grenchen reissue. I told him if I pass through there again in the future I will try to remember to have a Speedmaster LE with me to show him. He said "No, please don't do that. I recommend you do not bring any expensive watches if you come back."

Here in DC no one seems to notice Speedmasters except other Omega owners. I have not heard from any watch owners I know about getting undue attention.
I think that's one of the reasons I was drawn to the Speedmaster: it's very unassuming, yet very classy and functional. I can spot another Speedy from a block away.

Luckily we can always wear a speedy... In the car going to court! And no, I'm not going to defend a watch thief!

Given the country I’m going to say it’s a bicycle theft. Probably many bicycle thefts. Some bloke with a peloton in his garage of all different sizes.

They should have shot that single Brain cell Girlfriend, who was stupid and dumb enough, to bragg and publish the food and location.....

This sort of comment isn’t cool. Can we agree to not advocate for, condone, or normalize violence here?
