Not sure if it's "unrealistic", but I have never seen "Cartier" Astronaut Gold before - must be so rare ...

1999 bucks and it's all yours! 24 Jewels, 18K Rose Gold Movement pieces throughout and date functions, what's not to like?

I have been occasionally tempted to post items from our own sales corner on here as there are routinely 4 or 5 on every page which fit the bill but realise that a spell on the naughty step may follow if I did so!

That seller has quite a few optimistically-priced items... https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=timetitans&_sop=16

Such as this frankenbeauty, for only $1750

The case back is inconsistent (serial is too early for the other marking IMO), and the dial is too late for the serial (ie the 70M Resist dial should be after Feb 1970 yet the serial purports to date the watch June 69. And it's beaten up and doesn't even have a bracelet.

This is a real shame.

As a naive watch buyer, I’ve been told many times to buy with confidence on OF. Ive seen countless new members reminded that peddling their wares wasn’t allowed until they had 200 posts and could be trusted. I’ve seen many ‘should I buy this...’ questions with a response of ‘better buy from OF’.

Recently many red flags are popping up from trusted and knowledgeable OF members questioning high prices here. True dilemma as suddenly the source for normal ‘is this watch worth it at ‘x’’ cannot be asked here when it’s posted here... so we cannot trust the quality and authenticity of watches on eBay, and we cannot trust that prices are realistic on OF...

The OF sales forum is great because it weeds out the fakes, frankens, freaks and geeks. Members will call out redials, and mismatched parts almost immediately so there is a level of confidence one has when buying a watch here.

However, I mean, the buyer has to have some level of responsibility to research what they are buying. I don't think anyone on OF would say to just blindly go the the sales forum and pay the first asking price on any random watch and assume it's a great deal.

You have to educate yourself and know what you are buying on ANY forum.

Of course the buyer should research what they are buying. However, it's well understood that OF and the members here form a significant portion of 'research' for many newbies. A big part of that 'research' has to do with finding the right price-point for watches (as evidenced by this thread reaching page 46 already). Yet when a watch is posted here, questions about value cannot be asked and knowledgeable members will not say for fear of negative retribution.

As for 'great deals', those are always blatantly obvious on OF as the watch is sold within hours or minutes of being posted... hence my Watch Buying Paradox...

Before anyone mentions that questions can be asked via PM, that can also be challenging on OF as many sellers are friends with other members here, so this can be tricky to navigate. (I realize it's all part and parcel of a small somewhat 'tight-knit' community, and the benefits FAR outweigh any negatives).

EDIT: I've seen people post on OF about 'premiums' when buying on other platforms/sites (ie: Hodinkee), I wonder if people are starting to post on those other platforms/sites about an 'OF premium'... 😉
