Why the Scorn for a Date Function?

I would posit that there are a disproportionate amount of people on any watch forum that have an issue with having to set the date. Enthusiasts of any kind tend to acquire more of their desired product than the rest of the population. If you have multiple watches you wish to wear then having another thing to set each time you whip out something new to decorate your wrist could be an annoyance to some. For the regular folk or those of us who wear one watch most of the time, a date function can be quite desirable. It's rare for me to even own a watch that doesn't have a date function but I also have a strong attraction to chronographs. Fill up the dial please!

For me, a date is the single most useful complication. I use it every day.

I use the date window on my watches every day. It's a simple, instinctual act for me to look to my wrist, not my phone or even the calendar on my PC, to remind myself of the date.

The only problem I have is age. Reading the tiny numbers on most is near impossible for me. Yet I can not stand the “snot blob magnifier”, and don’t really care for the “large date” options. Quite the conundrum for me. So I guess it’s just no date for me going forward.

I have always preferred a watch with the date function, partly I guess as being in secondary school in the mid/late 80s just before PCs were really coming into the main - let alone the numerous smart devices we all now own.

In contrast with rotating, I enjoy setting the date/time or even day and getting familiar with a particular piece again before wearing... although i don't own many pieces...

I have found the date function extra useful during lockdown and remote working since each day seems to blur into the next.

whilst I think day/date dials are way too busy and I’ll never likely own one - I’ll wager that the owners of said watches are feeling really quite smug right now.

I think it comes down to how each of us views form and function and what level of preference we have for form vs function.

Personally, I like the function of seeing a date when checking my watch. I enjoy wearing my Speedy Pro's, but often find myself wishing they would show the date.

Also, I find the notion of not liking a date for "lack of symmetry" a little humorous, considering the date is usually right next to a giant crown protruding from the side of the case... asymmetrically
