Why did Steve McQueen wear such fancy stuff?

I am left handed, I wear my watch on the left wrist, I write with the left, and the last time I fired a Sterling, ( this dates me nicely ! ) it was with the left eye, ( despite being trained to use the right )

For me, Steve McQueen is regarded as iconic, because he basically did not give a shit,....he was great actor, made memorable films, was honest about what he wanted to do, & was very combative with authority / the Studio system.

He drove fast, & lived fast -"The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long " Lao Tzu

He also owned a D Type...........which easily elevated him to the 'Lap of the Gods'

I'm guessing you are left eye dominant...for shooting sports the dominant eye is more important than what hand you write with...

You are correct sir! 👍

Same as Icono ... I'm a lefty but I wear my watches on my left wrist. I always have - trying to fit them on the right just feels wrong to me somehow. Never had an issue with the watch or bracelet getting caught on anything, rubbed raw, or any other problem. Oddly enough, though, I shoot right handed ... everything else with the left. Go figure.

I'm surprised you other lefties (flw and Icono) wear it on your left wrist. I suppose the Fossil band might have been ruined because it was an $85 watch that had a cheap black finish on the stainless steel. Ever since then, though, I have just been worried about screwing up bands/bracelets! 🙁

The King of Cool! He made great films, drove great cars, and wore a 5512.

Can't for the life of me understand the fascination. Seems like a very midlife-crisis-kind-of-thing and strikes me as a bit pathetic.
Nice cars/women/watches though!

Writing with the left hand and having a watch in the way is very annoying. Same with those damn spiral notebooks. They are kryptonite to lefties. We hate them.
Ever throw a baseball with a watch on your arm? Talk about a true test.

That's a very good point. If you've got a stretch band on, your watch will probably go flying with the baseball!

"Fascination" / "pathetic" are perhaps a little harsh ?

It is more an appreciation of the fact that McQueen did not take himself, or his skills, too seriously.........He simply enjoyed the brief ride, & absolutely made the most of it

In a World of youthful 'something to prove' egos, & rampant 'dick measuring' ( occasionally, with respect, some elements of all Public Forums are a prime example ) - To see the personal choices of someone, such as McQueen, evidently so at ease with himself, & his raw ability, is to recognise, his was actually, a life well spent.

Most of the rest of us, have to work bloody hard, to maximise what little talent we have, to keep our families safe, secure, & prosperous.

In terms of other 'iconic actors' - One might, perhaps cite Bob Mitchum, & possibly Michael Caine, as coming from the same modest mould, of apparently effortless natural style, & yet demonstrating real aptitude in their careers ?

Yes. I was going to choose Michael Caine before Sean Connery but felt that Connery connects better with watch enthusiasts.

Michael Caine has the same aura of legitimacy as Steve McQueen. Nothing fake, period.

I have seen some really rough bashing of people who dared say similar to my statement on various other boards - hence the, probably, a bit harsh wording. I guess I just don't look up to actors, prefering real-life heroes (if any at all). Often people cannot differentiate between the actor and his roles, and referencing to photographs where he's posing, interviews he's given and the such. Completely uncritical.

Other iconic actors?

Brando, Newman, Redford, Belmondo ( perhaps the closest of them to McQueen) Alain Delon, also in a different way Gary Grant, Gregory Peck. Kirk Douglas, Mitchum....old school? Fairbanks and Chaplin, Errol Flynn... I mean there are soooo many. The more I type the more names come to mind. I'll end with Emma Stone just because I like her, no other reason. 😀

I think he owned the same XKSS, a road going D Type, a couple of times. The 'D' is the one road car I really need👍 A friend has an all alloy replica and it is stunning. Couple of pics from when I was a passenger on the M27 going to Goodwood race circuit. A bit incongruous on a weekday afternoon with all the trucks:

Great curves on the bonnet

Rear view dominated by the fin

Great video, he seems genuinely thrilled to be driving it. A real D or XKSS is so far out of reach but there are very close replicas available. I backed out of a Wingfield replica D at £50k about ten years ago::facepalm1:: and these are now far out of reach as well. I can't see this ever happening now🙁
