The planets aligned for this eBay listing with bad photos, scratched up crystal, bizarre strap choice, and more than fair BIN price. How could I say no ? Sellers picture below and I’ll post some more when it arrives.
I wonder why so many DS dials have taken on so much "patina", the watches were put in a very reliabel and waterresistant case. Compared for example to blue ribbons and eterna-brand kontikis, they seem to not have aged very well on average.
my theory is that the varnish(protective layer over the dial color and printing) was the weak part on the dials, together with dry gaskets and old leaking crowns, plus that most people haven't really taken care of these watches as they probably cost more to service than to buy, so when they stopped working, they wasn't properly taken care of in terms of how to keep a watch in dry conditions and so on....
Adding a bristol to the collection-very similar to the ds in size-its probably servicetime for this one, 5 minutes slow on the hour
It is certainly true (from my own observations, that is) that DS' often have quite aged dials and even those where it is only light, it is even across the dial, which to me would suggest that it is something inherent in the lacquer. Two of the three following (no. three now sold) have what I'd call typical DS aging:
I had one of these, personally I think they wear really well, even for a person with smaller wrists. The case is nicely proportioned and sits flat on the wrist. Here’s an old pic, unfortunately cannot locate a wrist shot for you:
I love Certina. One of my first brands to dig into. Some below: Early DS HW. V72 (not later V726) DS2 Chronolympic. DS2 Auto DS3 Auto DS2 Ph200 Auto And a relatively rare Certina chronograph with Excelsior Park movement. Cheers!
it also seems that watches from warmer damper countries(spain, italy etc)seems to be more damaged from moist intrusion than in the drier and colder countries(germany, denmark etc)-when following eBay auctions i have notice this.
I don't agree with your observation. I have found that the dials typically age rather lightly, and do not patinate heavily. There are some exceptions, of course, but I own around 20 of them, and very few show strong patina.
hi Just got my newest addition .. DS-2 Chronolympic w v72 same as @Northernman !!! And I bought it off the OF SALES FORUM TOO!!! Big thank you to @palkastu For a great buying experience ! With my broken left thumb and wrist, it was a challenge to swap out band for a twistoflex bracelet not the fashion statement but I can put I on and wear it on the “ wrong” right wrist... And here are pics from the seller.... What more can you ask for a V72 in a 200 m water resistant and “super shock proof “ case! Good Hunting Bill
Thanks, I miss it already Im a big Certina fan myself! Here is some of the watches that are still in my collection (Ive posted these pictures in an other thread, but you cant get enough of Certina, right?) :
