While hunting for a rare watch, do you buy a placeholder?

Just curious if you guys buy a similar watch when you are on the hunt for a more rare piece that you will not likely find for some while. In my case I'm looking for a less common no date Tudor Sub, however I have the urge to just buy a more common Tudor Sub date while I keep the search going for the more rare piece. My thought is that I would just flip the more common watch when I finally find the one I am looking for. How do you guys deal with the hunt for the rare birds?

Only if the price is right, and by that I mean underpriced.

It happens; you develop a degree of knowledge in a given segment and become familiar enough with prices that while searching for the object of your desire you also become familiar with the worth of similar items.

Sure, why not. You might end up keeping both!

The only time I would buy a substitute is if I knew the sub was liquid enough to sell fast if the real target popped up.

I'm sure this would be the case. This little "hobby" of mine has become a debilitating sickness.

Don't worry. You'll get better in a decade or so.

Do you think I can get my doctor to tell my wife this?

A rare piece? In my case, a place holder watch is risky. Before I acquired my "grail," I had a history of "climbing the ladder." Not exactly the same thing, but I never kept the cash laying around for the goal watch. I would save some cash, sell the watch and buy the next better one. Repeat.
If you have the cash for the goal watch when it shows up, AND the cash for the place holder, then heck yeah I'd do it.

As long as you took personal ownership of that old Sub FIRST, the rest is easy by comparison.
And y'know, a picture of that ancient diver would be okay... 😀

10 years for this to show up... I really don't have much wants anymore. Just parts, crown and plastic for my Cal 30T2 www for day to day wear.
Will have better photo when the 6S plus shows.
I am resist to get rid off the 5513 with box and paper R series, Speedmaster 105-002 needs to go out with Chronostop and Cosmic 2000, plus a Omega 14K Seamaster Bumper. 1035 Bracelet with end link... Just trying to contain the damage from one purchase.

Now that I know what watches you're considering cutting loose, I get it. Dilemma indeed...

Then you can remove the card and watch support and use the box for cigarettes, just like the card suggests!
