Which watch do you think will impress my neighbors more?

+1 @Superdoc

I assume nobody in the general public cares about the watch I'm wearing, and those who notice, wouldn't know anything about what I'm wearing anyway unless its a Rolex. I will admit, the first nice watch I bought, I walked around like peacock for a couple weeks waiting for praise, admiration, and new levels of respect. When it didn't come because nobody noticed or cared, I started to figure out that I really was wearing it for me.

If your neighbors reaction is what matters to you just make a print of the purchase receipt and glue it to your forehead.

Otherwise Patek always has a good effect

Vacheron Constantin Overseas for the win!

but of all the VC yo can get, why get an explorer? they have other more proprietary and refined designs. don't get me wrong, I love the explorer...but that's what the explorer is for

However if you're looking for a "special" dress-up day/night timepiece, I always loved my Langes more than my Pateks. Especially a Lange Up & Down - simply elegant.
,

Miki's words are especially pertinent and potent, trust me when I say he's a very effective Lange enabler 😗

My feeling though is that while most non-WIS might not recognize a Nautilus, they would recognize the Patek brand, and thus be suitably impressed.

On Saturday night, I attended a wedding wearing a Patek Philippe 5035r. I was amazed that everyone only seemed to notice the wonderful bride and groom. Perhaps the watch was too small at 37mm? 😀

To speak to the original question - it depends on the neighborhood. I'm in AP ROO country - it is there, bigger than life, on the side of the bus shelter on my block, in a particularly hideous execution. Guarantees the neighborhood can identify it, esp. those who use public transport.

I like Lange, but I'd go Datograph. It could be a phase I'm going through, but I dig it.

Are you seriously deciding on a watch based on What OTHER people will think?

I have long since abandoned the Idea of watch as Status Symbol...

The reason for your watch purchase is what speaks about you, not the dollars spent or brand prestige...
The man wears the watch.. not the other way around.

Well, I'm not being unserious. You try getting emasculated and tell me how it feels. lol 😀

I can't remember half the watches i have but definitely remember the last one i decided to buy based on what other people think - I was 24 years young and it was a Rolex 18k day-date. Bought it off one of the prop guys on the Latin America desk who was having an awful week. Looking back, I probably looked like a show-off rolling around nyc with that leg spreader hanging off my wrist. Actually, I probably looked more like a jerk off.

Still have it but haven't worn it in almost 20 years?

I never thought I'd have the jones for a ROO because I generally don't get along with the sort of guys who wear those things. But, now I'm thinking...maybe.

Then I was thinking the Nautilus might be a better option.

So, here I am, asking your advice.

I'm way past being moralistic about buying watches. Frankly, it's all pretty hedonistic. Don't you agree?

"Leg Spreader" ha!..... Times have changed beyond all recognition .... Most of the young guys I work with now check the time on their phones, and are afraid to tell people they are traders - they pretend to work for Spotify or something similar in order to try and spread the afore mentioned legs.....
