How many times do I got to tell this guy Rising Sun?

Buy the Rising Sun
Rising Sun all day long. Beautiful watch which is so different to every other Speedmaster its desirability will only increase over time.

But why do people call it “Rising Sun”?!

At first it was a curiosity; as its increasingly repeated, it’s become a nervous tic.

The colors of Tokyo 2020 watches represent the 5 colors of the Olympic Rings.

The Olympic Ring colors represent the 5 different ~continents.

The red Olympic Ring represents the Americas.

The red Tokyo 2020 watch represents the Americas - not Japan!

The green Tokyo 2020 watch represents Asia (hey, that’s where Japan is!).

Self-audienced rant complete.

Why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

The first two suggestions were "Conjunctivitis" and "Hangover." This is a family message board, so I can't tell you what #3 was. "Rising Sun" was #4 😗😁

So as the Dark side of Moon disappeared and it was time to change from Batman to the Hulk as always during the Rising Sun due to having a Speedy meeting with the President of Pepsi over a few Root Beers as we can get a quick Snoopy at the new Coke advertising with Kermit .

Good show!

Also, convenient for to pointing out that “one of these things is not like the others” (I.e., there’s like 22 people who would know what “Rising Sun” is, and they’re all hanging out on only this thread). 😁

historically problematic Rising Sun flag.

Yeah, and it’s a fair f*ckin’ critique!

On the other hand it's quite obvious to make that connection with a watch of this colour scheme.

I guess, but it does take ignoring both the intent and the subject of the watch’s LE theme and the substance and history of its subject.

It’s be like people taking the Snoopy, and calling it the “Charles Shulz”

I don’t usually venture out of the vintage section over to modern, so I had to look up what the rising sun was. Several pages in and no one has even posted any pics of the watches under consideration 😲

Re the rising sun, I think I would struggle to tell the time with that dial and handset, so that’s a big pass IMO

I went for speedy 60th and find it a perfect blend of vintage and modern.

My only defense is that I put the reference number in my initial post. 😗😟

That's a good point about the visibility, although I think the people who own the watch say that the contrast is better than what you see in the photos.

Agree on the legibility, it can be difficult in daylight but tilting the wrist a bit will always resolve this. Under artificial light it's not an issue.

Since you asked and for what it's worth, get the sandwich.

It seems you want a moonwatch. If you get something else you will still want a moonwatch. The sandwich is on my list of wants because I like the idea of looking at the movement and that it is a "special" moonwatch. Not everyone likes an exhibition caseback and I can understand that. It works for me with the sandwich. Also, the hesalite crystal debate is endless but a hesalite crystal is clearer in my mind, regardless of the authenticity argument. Hesalite also doesn't smudge like sapphire. Sapphire on the back is where it should be.

You will be able to get your money out of it. But you won't want to sell it. You will wear it and it will become your watch, if not your favorite.

If you buy a watch with just a hint of the idea that you may sell it someday then the chances are likely that you will sell it. It's a hassle and it changes how your relationship with the watch.

You know what you want. Now you are confused by all the advice. Trust your gut.

And pictures later.

Cheers and here's to a great 2021!

Well, I'm sure everyone's been waiting with baited breath for my final decision, and I went with...NEITHER. 😜 @Kringkily made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a 3592.50, so that's what I went with. It's arriving tomorrow. The only problem is that I need about an inch worth of links for its 1479/812 bracelet. I asked my local AD, and a few non-local dealers and OBs. It appears that I'll need two links, and the 114ST1479 links are about $100 each.

Anyone have any other suggestions? If I could find a cheap enough 1479 bracelet, I might just buy it for parts. I was also wondering if the 1469 would work for parts. I'm not really sure how wide those links are (16mm? 18mm?)

And, of course, I could buy an Uncle Seiko bracelet for less than the cost of a few links.

Pics will be forthcoming once I have the watch in-hand! ::psy::

My apologies to @Hands90 for not getting the Rising Sun first 😁

Regarding "wait and see," I'm actually doing that with Grand Seiko. I want to get a hi-beat none of them (at least online) quite do it for me, except for the SBGH267, which, of course, is the one that now sells for close to the A11. So I'll just keep checking the forums (fora?) and bugging my buddy who works for Grand Seiko until "the watch" comes along. Or the price for that SBGH267 collapses. 😗

Have you seen the new Birch Bark dial with the new Hi Beat movement? Just gorgeous.

For the record, I would have gone Rising Sun over the sandwich.

Yeah, I've seen the White Birch. I guess they just started being delivered, because everyone in the GS group on FB has been posting their wrist shots. I agree with you about it. The only problem is...I have an OG Snowflake, and my next GS can't be another textured white dial. Especially if it's $10,000.

So why would you have chosen the Rising Sun over the sandwich?

Oh yeah, it's the white birch, not birch bark...lol, oops.

Rising Sun - Purely aesthetics - I like the silver dial/red bezel combo, but especially the silver dial (even with a black bezel). Also in regards to your situation, might the rising Sun be harder to source down the road?

If we were talking the 3861 sapphire, then I would have a harder time deciding and might lean the 3861. I have the Hesalite version and think it's my #1 choice over any, so a bit biased. Rising Sun a close third, Canopus would be my close 2nd, but way out of my league so moot.

I like the look of the Rising Sun as well. And you're right, 6-12 months from now they might be $10k or more, while the sandwich price hasn't changed. But I'll look at it from a practical standpoint, the sandwich was a lot cheaper, and, as @pdxleaf mentioned above, it IS a moonwatch.

While the 3861s are super-nice, they're also the new thing. The only shortage is "today." It's the opposite of the others I was considering in that they'll get MORE common as time goes on. And probably cheaper with discounts, since I'm sure no one is discounting them today.

Now if they offer a new hesalite sandwich, I might have some buyers remorse, but probably not...😉

This is the dilemma whose horns I'm currently on, have a 1861 Hesalite which I'm going to trade on a 3861, really like the display back on the sapphire, like the bracelet, the applied logo but don't know if I can live with the " milky ring". I really prefer the warmth and clarity of the Hesalite. Both are currently hard to get, at least together to compare. My AD advises that Omega generally won't alter a watch from it's original configuration, so I'll probably go with which ever shows up first. With my luck, they'll probably do a 3861 Hesalite sandwich right after I get home with whichever I choose. At 73, I'm not doing a lot of waiting for much of anything. In reality, should probably wait for the Hesalite, I'm just going to be grateful for a METAS movement that hacks. My "Grail" watch is a Silver Snoopy, but $30k? Insanity unless I hit the lottery.
