Which is the most desirable DON colour here? And do you have others to show?

Based on the most recent sale I think that is nearly $20k of bezels... I'm partial to the grey ones.
I think we are all getting a little carried away here.

Only one of the bezels in the OP is approaching high quality. The best one might breach 2000 on eBay, but it does have the damage between 85/90.

The rest would sell well, but $500-800 might be more realistic. Perhaps even 1000. However the value of these lesser bezels are like all lower quality things dragged up in a rising or bubbling market, where the shock of seeing the top quality sell for astronomical prices panics people into buying something on price alone. ("Oh look how cheap I bought this for"). When the dust settles, the poorer bezels will be judged on their attraction alone, and be found wanting.

These lesser bezels may well have further to go, but really in the long run it is only quality that retains its value, and while I am amused by seeing degraded bezels, especially attractive ones, they loose the appeal if they are a lot of money.

The bezels that achieve over $2000 are almost always black, and for the most part undamaged. These high quality bezels in my opinion will continue to $5000 as long as the demand for 2998's is strong enough to support the auction houses selling them for $30,000+.

Isn't the top photo there a later model bezel than the lower one, like post 1990? I like the grey one.

This bezel/watch was stored in a safe deposit box from the late seventies to about 2002? and then lay in a drawer for another 5 years. So roughly 30 years out of the light and still it faded. I have a replacement bezel on my 2998-5 right now. I think this one is going back on today.

Yup, they were removed from bezels and replaced with nos Omega inserts several years ago.
I just hung on to them because, ......well I'm not sure, I just thought they might be useful in the future.

Anyone else notice the preponderance of ghosts in tall tach bezels? Looks to be 71-74 watches?

Where did you get the NOS inserts? Can you put up pictures of those? Somebody here stated they believed Omega never made bezel insert available as spare part for the Speedmasters.

Just to make sure that I've been understanding what I've been reading, these particular bezels were in use from the early 70s through the late 80s/early 90s weren't they? Or are there subvariations?

The black bezel looks like nothing out there - it's a mix of something. The 7s look like those on modern bezel. Dots and no È look like those on Dot-next-to-70 bezel. But the 2s really stand out from all of the known ones.

The way I look at it, the black always has the potential of going grey, ghost, brown, or blue. But none of those will ever be black and unmarred again.
My understanding is that the few "truly blue" bezels were an error in the paint mix, thus most rare. Can anyone confirm this?

Bought from Watchco or the other AUS lot years ago.
So did I, but I think I've only one left now.
