2 days to go, 72 bids but only reached about €340 so far? Is there something wrong with this watch, if so, why are there so many bids? I would have thought a Ulysse Nardin wristwatch would be attracting much higher bids if it was right, and very few if it were wrong.

I don't know much about that exact model but it does indeed have almost 2 days to go and a lot can happen real fast towards the end :)

    Complete, and ludicrously poor fake.

So "something" isn't wrong with it – everything is! :D

I'm still very much a newbie and have been focusing my education on Omegas but I did think the movement looked suspect, and yet it has so many bidders. Normally the dodgy watches have suspiciously few bids, not this many.

True, but I'd expect a good watch to be much higher by now, and with 72 bids you know people are not holding back. I think Tony C has answered the question, but that still leaves me confused.

It is not remotely a "good" watch. Unfortunately, though, as P. T. Barnum purportedly noted a long time ago, and the bidding confirms, "There's a sucker born every minute".

I mean if it were right it would be a good watch. I'm assuming all these bidders think this is not a fake. I get that there will always be people who can be suckered into buying a fake, I've just never seen so much interest in a fake watch before, but then maybe I haven't been observing for long enough.

Yes, that's correct. There are obviously fake, or "incorrect" watches, that sell for thousands of dollars, and not only on eBay, but through well-established dealers.

Stick around long enough and your eyes will be wide open. ;)

Yes, well, I don't mean to put you off of the hunt, but you would be well-advised to do careful due diligence before spending any significant (whatever that means to you) money on a vintage watch.

This one is obvious to a seasoned eye, but most are more subtle, which is why careful vetting is so important.

I'd like to think I've already paid most of my newbie tax on a watch I like very much but probably paid too much for. I'm much more wary now, not just by researching more carefully, but as this thread shows, by viewing auctions with a fair degree of suspicion. OF has been a fantastic place to learn from knowledgeable and generous experienced collectors, not just about watches themselves, but also how to handle myself in the marketplace.
