Yea but why? if its a hedge against inflation or something why not precious metals which have traditionally been so popular throughout Asia. What's their motivation for buying into this specifically over other (frankly less worrying) asset classes.
The China factor probably has to do with all the new money and looking for a place to invest and bitcoin has been getting a lot of attention. Japan is also another since the government approved bitcoin as legal payment in April.

I have a friend who's son went to work for a data storage facility as a summer job while finishing college up and proposed to the owner that they should start mining bitcoins because they have the perfect environment. My friend, his son, and the owner formed a partnership and started buying miners a few years ago. The miners were paying themselves off very quickly and they would reinvest in more miners. They now have 100's of miners and are doing very well. Timing is everything as they say....getting in and getting out.

Bitcoin is used by people in China, Russia, etc to move money without the approval of the government. Americans use it to fund overseas sports books for online gambling. It is used to pay hacking ransoms. I just read that the pot shops in Colorado are using bitcoin ATMs in their offices. The pot shops are not allowed to use credit cards or legitimate banks. Customers can use a Visa to purchase bitcoins on the spot. It is the only method for a "cashless" purchase for pot.

If you are curious, open an account with Coinbase.com. 100% legit company backed by Wall Street. A fun activity to buy bitcoins and then purchase some things with it.
