Cross posting from another thread:
Breaking news from Hong Kong: due to violations of restrictions on gatherings to prevent spread of COVID, the launch of the MoonSwatch has been cancelled in at least two locations (Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay). Apparently some of the groups lining up got into a fight and someone called the police.

What a clusterf***, most of these clowns are just flippers who have no intention of gifting or wearing this plastic watch.

Looking at the people in the queues, it’s got a much more of a “queue outside Supreme” feel than anything else… but if these aren’t limited (which Swatch have said they’re not) then those kids who are used to flipping Supreme swag for 10x it’s RRP might be in for a shock.

Not too surprised to hear the in-store releases are limited, by design.

The bigger question is how limited-by-design the later online release will be.

Swatch is saying “it’s not a limited edition” but Omega fans know best that phraseology is a nuanced sort of double-speak.

Swatch is also saying “there will be plenty for everyone” but they’re also already saying “golly gee, there’s no way we could have anticipated this much demand!?”

Trying to remember to hate the game, not the player

Here’s my take.

First of all, Swatch has always made cheap plastic watches. While I’ve not seen or held this in person like the rest of you, I’m almost certain that this will have a cheap plastic feel like every other Swatch ever produced. When I first saw the professional photos from Omega, they looked high quality. But, subsequent photos and videos from less flattering angles show the the quality to be cheap. The ticking seconds, the cheap, plastic velcro strap that looks like it would break in a month of wear. None of it looks flattering to Omega.

The real reason for this mashup is because Hayek is trying to prop-up sales at Swatch. The lower priced Swiss watch industry is collapsing right before everyone’s eyes. I’m sure the only reason Aeschlimann agreed to this is because Hayek forced him to. Imagine if you were the CEO of Omega and its an independent watch atelier and some cheap watch company that’s going through rough times comes to you to do a collaboration? I’m sure Aeschlimann was really thinking that Hayek should go f#!k himself. But of course he couldn’t since Hayek is his boss.

Unless things turned around quickly for Swatch, the division, not the parent, it’s in danger of going extinct due to the collapse of the lower end of the market. They had to do something. It’s important because the Hayek family built their entire empire on the Swatch brand. There’s no way Jr. would let the Swatch brand die under his watch. So, this entire scheme was built on the idea of leveraging the Omega brand in order to save the Swatch brand. It will work great for Swatch but not so great for Omega. Sure, it may lead to a bit more sales for Omega as some will graduate to the real deal but Swatch will benefit far more than Omega.

Also, I heard that Swatch stores have now changed their policy. They’re only allowing one per customer tomorrow.

Oh yea, Tl;dr. Why? Did someone else mention this already? If so, sorry for the repeat.

They should follow up with street-style/hypebeast celebrities (I'm old I don't know the term, hope you get the point) spotted rocking these MoonSwatches. That'll blow things up for sure.
Swatch been jumping the brand rank on that site due to this release. Literally from nobody to somebody overnight.

As these MoonSwatch have full entered the hype cycle, folks should stop looking at eBay (almost nobody uses that, legitimately, for these types of products) - and instead go to Stock X

Unlike eBay, thing StockX is not only a marketplace for buying such items but it has a far more transparent “stock market” like data capture (this the name).

I just went to check the market activity for the “moon” version, and stopped scrolling the completed sales data after what just have been several hundred (all trading in the $600-$700 range)

What I found as interesting: all the colorways are trading in roughly this price range

2022 is obviously not yet in the books, and for your own statement that revenues have “remained flat” it would necessitate a 2010-2020 comparison

10 years is actually 2012-2021 as you include both ends of the interval.

feel free to pull up Omega’s then Swatch Group’s annual reports, but for a quick and dirty preview through the lens of the entire Swiss watch industry and how quartz vs mechanical have fared in the face of the last 10 years :

Omega's individual annual report? 😁 and where might that be. A few days ago when I checked the group's, there was no breakdown of revenue and profit by brand. It seems to me you're either just infering the conclusions from other incomplete data or you have inside knowledge from omega.

Look, at the end of the day this conversation has no point. There is only one way to determine if this was a good idea or not for omega: wait at least a year.

these early sales are so driven by online flex and influencer purchases - having it before others, on your feed, is the goal

as the day develops, the real trouble for Swatch/Omega may finally be unfolding: the dirty underbelly of hype rollouts sliming the brand names

Hey, if they get 20 of each color, you may get lucky and walk out with Uranus 😁

For those of us of a certain age we’ve seen this before: beanie babies. This will 100% end up being a black mark on the Omega brand.

yeah, one wonders why a company with no electronics/software expertise doesn't use it's 500M annual operating profit (as much as Apple makes every other day) to take on the worlds biggest tech company 🙄[

No electronic expertise true, maybe the Swatch group needs to promote Flik Flak and compete with Casio
