2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo XI but also the last year to adhere to the anti-magnetic standard
Omega's very last chance to produce a real classic Speedmaster 馃摉
Preferably:
Manual winding steel chronograph with 1968 black Speedmaster dial.
Of course a special caseback decorated with the mission logo similar to the 30th anniversary Apollo XI The Eagle Has Landed
For sale in a small box, not the huge shoe boxes Speedmasters come in today...

I think the only way for Omega to truly honor the moonwatch legacy is by producing a moonwatch - nothing more. A true, correct, 105.012-66, with dot over 90 bezel, skinny Omega crown, classic dial, and 321 movement. This has been discussed a bit here in prior threads over the past couple years, but the calibre 321 movement is both within the Swatch family, and in product current production in a couple higher-end watch lines. Furthermore, given that the 1861 actually shares a number parts because the 321 (and its precedents) are is base calibre, this isn't all that much of a stretch.

From a corporate standpoint, Omega's intention is to move as much as possible to in-house, coaxial movements, while they've already committed to retaining one single manual hand-wound movement for the Speedmaster Professional (this is per a Urquhart interview circa 2012). Given that Omega plans to carry a single hand-wound movement for this purposes of honoring its moonwatch legacy, it makes sense to truly get this right, with a calibre 321, which is exactly the movement that was used on the moon, and not its derivative.

We all know that Omega loves knocking out a limited edition Speedmaster. With the big 50th anniversary of the moon landings in 2019, one can only expect there will be another special edition (or editions plural!?). I was considering this morning what I'd like from an Omega 50th anniversary special edition speedy and came up with:

- steel case, hesalite crystal, steel case back.

- manual wind. Ideally a column wheel movement - perhaps a reboot of the cal.321 movement of a new movement inspired by the 321.

- stepped dial with an applied metal logo. I love these and think the AML really adds something to the aesthetic.

- tear-drop chrono hand.

- no special logos/mission patches on the sub registers to keep the pieces as close to original design as possible although perhaps a x of y printed of its limited production numbers (see below for more thoughts on numbers)
- special case back referencing the landing. Not sure what I'd want this to look like as sometimes less is more.
- something really special packaging wise with a book covering the details of the selection process, photographs, something on the development of the original and the new piece, exploded movement diagrams.
- a selection of straps (NATO, Velcro NATO, leather and bracelet). I'd love to see the bracelet as a homage to the spring link bracelets of the '60s.
- no faux patina. In fact, go for something a little different on the lume colour - perhaps the blue of the new Rolex Air King.
- limited run. Probably of 1969 pieces.
- a better answer however would be a "general" piece just for the 2019 production year only so that anyone who wants a piece to mark the occasion can get one. None of the ck2998 silliness of being "approved" by Omega!

What would your ideal 50th anniversary speedy look like?
Yours is a really great wish list. I'll deposit full amount with OB today if they confirm your specifications!! I'm sure it'd be an all time best seller watch for Omega!!! Amen

Omega please listen to us here. We all crave to have a new original moonwatch with all original specifications. Now I'm sure it would be a great watch with immediate success. What else you are waiting for in this downwards recessionary market? JUST DO IT...

A DON bezel is I think not realistic - it's far too esoteric for the mainstream watch buyer to be bothered about. To some extent this also applies to the movement.

Older style dial and hands with applied logo is eminetly achievable and would also distinguish it from the standard production run. They could throw a curveball in by including the lumed bezel from the Snoopy/CK?

So in essence, and based on this, what we want is just a new production pre-moon Speedmaster

something like a 321 is not that out of reach. The Speedy Pro MK2 re-issue had a column wheel movement. I'd bet advances in manufacturing makes these things easier to make now.

Not at all " Pre-Moon " as it would have an 1861 manual movement but look like a 1965 speedmaster 馃憥

Keep it nice and dignified (sort of 'less is more' vibe)
I think, I agree, it would need to be based upon the 105.012... (maybe with incorrect bracelet, chrono and crown just like mine)馃檨 Dont go OTT with the graphics. Just a tasteful reference to the 50th anniversary on the case back.

I don't know enough about movements to know what ought to go inside. Is a 321 possible??? Anyway, as long as it makes all the hands on the front bit go round and round nicely. I'm easily pleased.馃槙
