We all know that Omega loves knocking out a limited edition Speedmaster. With the big 50th anniversary of the moon landings in 2019, one can only expect there will be another special edition (or editions plural!?). I was considering this morning what I'd like from an Omega 50th anniversary special edition speedy and came up with: - steel case, hesalite crystal, steel case back. - manual wind. Ideally a column wheel movement - perhaps a reboot of the cal.321 movement of a new movement inspired by the 321. - stepped dial with an applied metal logo. I love these and think the AML really adds something to the aesthetic. - tear-drop chrono hand. - no special logos/mission patches on the sub registers to keep the pieces as close to original design as possible although perhaps a x of y printed of its limited production numbers (see below for more thoughts on numbers) - special case back referencing the landing. Not sure what I'd want this to look like as sometimes less is more. - something really special packaging wise with a book covering the details of the selection process, photographs, something on the development of the original and the new piece, exploded movement diagrams. - a selection of straps (NATO, Velcro NATO, leather and bracelet). I'd love to see the bracelet as a homage to the spring link bracelets of the '60s. - no faux patina. In fact, go for something a little different on the lume colour - perhaps the blue of the new Rolex Air King. - limited run. Probably of 1969 pieces. - a better answer however would be a "general" piece just for the 2019 production year only so that anyone who wants a piece to mark the occasion can get one. None of the ck2998 silliness of being "approved" by Omega! What would your ideal 50th anniversary speedy look like?
For every one of them to sent up to the ISS and individually floated from one astronaut to the other, then sent back to earth for sale.
Well, there are a lot of good things allready said! Steel case, stell caseback, hesalite, maybe a 312 comeback/remake, a medium limitation, close to the original, no design experiments, etc. Only one aditional idea from my side for the caseback: The Moon-Surface in a low 3D steel profile would be cool BR Hans
They already made a 50th Anniversary Speedmaster for the original model. Maybe Breitling, Rolex, Bulova, and Seiko should make anniversary models too since they've all been worn in space too. You mean crumbles of Swiss cheese?
For the 50th anniversary I'd love to see a limited edition of 50 watches. Unfortunately most of us would miss out but anything near 2000 pieces is not very limited, is it?
While we can all dream of a future Speedmaster with a "new" 321 movement, I think this is just a fantasy. I just do not see it as profitable for Omega. They have the 1861 (and its variants) which is a perfectly robust and functional manual chronograph movement. They've invested millions of dollars into the development of the new automatic co-axial chronograph movements. Any 50th anniversary Speedmaster of the moon landings will likely be either like the FOIS or CK2998 special editions with the 1861 movement, or be like the 1957 reissues with the automatic co-axial movement. And I predict special logos, a large number run, and a special case/medallion to justify a much higher price.
"What would you like to see in a 50th anniversary speedmaster?" Nekkid wimin and a fountain of youth.
If the 50th anniversary Apollo 11 watch is half as nice as the one Omega did for the 50th anniversary of Gemini 4 it will be one sweet ass watch. Below is a picture of the 50th Anniversary Gemini 4 watch for anyone that hasn't seen it yet. Pretty sharp looking!!
Before we even hit 2019....there's going to be the 2017 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster watch....I'm sure Omega will put out a LE ;-) Back in 2007 they did two watches to celebrate i think... http://www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-50th-anniversary-limited-edition/ http://www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-omega-speedmaster-1957-50th-anniversary-2007/
