I've acquired this 69 SW Speedmaster parts for not much money at all

Only things missing is the movement and hands

Dial has some of the track missing between 4 and 5 and the bezel is toast

Is it worth hunting a correct 31-32 mil movement bezel and hand set

depends on your desire to bring it back to life, and budget, or if you just want to part it out and try and cash in. You could try and just get any 861 movement (so, not a speedy, hunting as cheap as possible) and modern service hands that are 'aged'...

what were the first thoughts you had when snapping it up?

I don't see the upside in trying to restore this. Even with a movement and hands, it won't be an appealing watch. The case and bracelet will be easy sales, and free up some cash that you can put towards something good.

Exactly this.

When buying a basket case I need to be clear with myself why I'm buying it before I pull the trigger.

Usually its because I see a sparkle of life under a scratched crystal and I think I can turn an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Alternatively do I need some of the parts (or you could part out he whole thing)?

Buying a project and deciding the end game afterwards is risking a money pit.

Unfortunately given the condition of the dial and bezel, I don't see any upside to restoration here, assuming there's no sentimental value.

I'd either part it out or possibly make a fun (but cheap) franken with what parts i happens to come across over the next year or so.

That watch has seen a hard life. What's the movement look like? You can pour a pile of money into this watch and it is still going to look pretty tired. Wouldn't be worth it to me.

Try to clarify your goal.

Do you want a -69 SW to keep for yourself? If so, I'd try and find a nicer one.

If you're looking to make a quick buck, I'd just sell as is.

If you want a fun project? I'd just use the cheapest 861 I could find in decent condition. No point in spending time and money for on ein the correct serial range when it will still be a put together.

I was going to write..yay go for it, don't listen to the purists if your heart is set on this. Then I did the math...It'll cost a lot and you'd still be left with a Frankenbeater....Sell it all as is and put it towards getting yourself a nice vintage Mark II .

That poor watch seems to have been put through hell. It's even got what appear to be cigarette burns on the bezel. I'm betting she kept her mouth shut despite all the torture, and kept on trying to keep time until the very end.

Actually I have never seen a tachy bezel on a Speedy destroyed like that. But it makes sense if someone used it to put out cigarettes on.... 😵‍💫

Well if there's another 640 end link and you do decide to part it out, I know who'll buy them / the entire bracelet 😁

If you ask me - you could hang onto the dial and wait til the next otherwise nice -69 comes up with a service dial. Might as well sell the other stuff at the very least IMO.

It depends how quickly you want to do something with it, parts will come up but you could be talking a couple of years. Patience and a dogged search are the key. If not, you’ll get a good chunk for the parts.

SW’s are sought after.

Send it to Omega like that.....

🍿🍿
That’s the best idea yet. I’d love to see the bill from Bienne.

i believe i remember William do this on an epic Time4apint podcast, and it looked fantastic

From the “If You Can’t Beat ‘em, Join ‘em Department,” just throw a seiko quartz movement in there with a resin spacer and a dial you find in a parts bin, or just make one up, and sell on eBay it as a rare but important piece, without specifying why it’s rare and important.

Bought a nice used car once. Only thing missing was the engine, tires, and seats...

Jokes aside, I suppose the case is nice. Frankly, though, if I was in the market for parts I would have little interest in the rest of it.

Just my $0.02

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck!
