With the new Bond, do they need to finally retire the Walther PPK, what should replace it?

The PPK is almost a part of Bond iconography at this point and I'm sure Walther would be heartbroken if it finally got sacked, but its already pushing credulity a bit that Bond villains can afford secret lairs and yachts but balk at the cost of a kevlar vest.

During the Daniel Craig era they tried to work around it by having it used minimally and seeing him switch to a rifle, SMG, or literally anything else for a lot of action as 8 rounds of .32 ACP does not make for an exciting scene.

I feel like there are probably few ways it could go...

1: Producers go full John Wick, sign a deal with an overpriced jewellery-level race gun manufacturer to have bond carry a new limited edition 2011 for each movie

2: They take the boring but accurate approach with a Glock 19 / 26

3: They lean in to SIG, give him a 320, and have a scene where he's bound in a chair with his weapon on the table, and shoots the guy by blowing on the slide at just the right angle

4: Go for something that at least has a new iconic silhouette to replace the PPK like the Laugo Alien

5: Keep pretending the PPK is still something Q branch would let a new, younger Bond go out in the wild with in 2026+

(Btw, though this is outside the firearms thread, it's relevant to the next Bond so should be an exception.)

My thoughts.

1. The marketing temptation is strong with this one, but I doubt a single manufacturer could keep up with the demand each movie.

2. Glocks are very unattractive and would ruin the line of a jacket or a dress/skirt.

3. I'd hate to be the Armourer on set where they had to use a 320, it's too ugly anyway.

4. The smaller Alien Remus with anti-snag iron sights is a good contender IMO.
The fixed top rail and the minimum kick-up would be good if the new Bond was a lady, also suit rapid fire demolition of the enemy in the hands of a skilled marksman.

5. The prettiest of them all and one of my favourites and it was a pleasure to shoot (only 2 mags back in the 1970s).
But modern advances demand something with hitting power. If a baddie thought they'd might have been hit by a .32 they'd be more angry than dead.

So, my vote would be for the Alien Remus. I'll think more about it and may reconsider when others come up with their thoughts.

If they go for a SIG, it should be the 365. Much better than the 320 and about the same size as the PPK.

1) That idea may be viable.

2) No.

3) 🤣

4) I think this is an interesting idea, and really one of the only smaller guns that stands out from the crowd.

5) I think this is probably what they'll do.

My own two cents: Go with something like a Wilson Combat EDC X9. It is modern while mostly looking like a proper 1911, at least in the silhouette.

It depends on the direction they go. If they go back to the 60s, then stay with the PPK. If they are continuing in the 2020s then something else.

As with the Bond Seamaster, wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to pitch a brand deal for whatever manufacturer wants to cough enough bucks.

The. 32 ACP at the time was the caliber which worked for deep consealment pistols. Times have changed now .380/9mm have smaller packages which conceal just as well with more punch for a modern agent.

Probably nothing with a shake awake feature would be appreciated by everyone involved.

Sci-fi answer provides a quick solution: “Mr.Bond, this PPK has been specially upgraded for you to fire AP 5.7s - Kevlar who.”

Replace it with the Walther PDP (in match config)…its big, bold and tool-y like the modern incarnations of Bond 😀

No hideous double-action-only plastic pistols need apply.

A blued, forged steel Walther PPK is elegant and timeless and as modern looking today as it was nine decades ago when it was introduced and rakish and sexy in a way that no plastic clunk can ever be.

It’s fantasy so Bond can be effective with whatever side arm he carries.

Me? Not so much. I’ve had four of the Walthers, all PP models, three in .32 and one in .380. None of them were dependable enough to be worth a flip. Despite this I would still like to try another.

Watches or guns, I’m all about vintage all the time!

You're saying you couldn't shoot down a Eurocopter Dauphin 2 with a PPK? 😮

I had a stainless in .380 for awhile. Every time I used it I came away with slide cuts on the big knuckle of my right thumb. I could only avoid that with very careful effort, which turned me off of the platform for any kind of real use. Too many other options.

Only if you have an attachable butt stock and scope which doesn't need to be sighted in.

Let Bond keep the Walther, as mentioned above it dont ruin the line of his jacket. And any other hand gun would not penetrate kevlar anyways, would they? Bond could always pick up a rifle from a slayn enemy or Q branch could make some special penetrering ammo if he have to shoot through kevlar.

Generally I hope he will "MacGyver" him self out of tricky situations in stead of taking the easy way and just shoot.

Bond had a nasty spell as a result of carrying a Beretta...

Yeah, I remember that and from the book. But that was a tiny .25 caliber pistol. Wouldn’t have the same problem with the new Cheetah!
