What Makes a Seller Trustworthy in Your Eyes? (And a Beta Invite)

I think the private sales on OF works very well for sellers to propose their watches.

I am curious about the stats of the WTB section though, which is effectively the buyers’ section. I feel like it has some, but much weaker, reach than the sales one. (It’s not a shameless plug for my WTB!)

Connecting is a nice idea and I feel the sweet spot here is to improve on the buyers side looking for specific references. Sellers have already a multitude of platforms to reach the widest audience if they want. The only flaw is that whether it works always depends on the seller checking the website for people interested in a reference he might want to part with.

Having said that, it could perhaps be an interesting feature for a seller to be able to enter some of the watches he could be interested in selling, kept privately and not accessible to anyone. Then when a buyer matches that reference, the seller gets a notification and can decide whether he would like to reach out or not.

If this is mostly for collectors, then I suppose the badge system works quite well - many people will be on forums and could provide some proof. The feedback from these forums would help with the first layer of security at least.

I was able to grasp the basic concept readily and I think it could have value, the challenge will be to get enough reliable users on the site to actually have it function as intended. For me personally, I doubt I would use it to make any major purchases based on a verification badge alone. But it could be used to make the initial connection and then work out the details of how to make the financial transaction in a way that buyer and seller were both comfortable with.
You got it exactly right ! It's really about making that initial connection. Now the real question is: would anyone actually be interested in using something like this? Could it help ease some of the usual pains both buyers and sellers face?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I think you're really touching on the core opportunity here.

“Be able to enter some of the watches he could be interested in selling, kept privately and not accessible to anyone.”

That's exactly the idea: not having to go through the effort of publicly listing a watch you might consider selling, unless you already know there's someone looking for it. A quiet, one-to-one intent match.

The way WatchPrompt works is that sellers can privately enter watches they’re open to parting with, and when a buyer posts a matching wish, the system notifies the seller. Then it’s entirely up to him whether he wants to engage or not.

No pressure, no storefront, just a nudge that someone out there is looking for exactly what you might have. Now the key question is: would a system like this be useful enough for you to actually try it - or do you know a specific kind of collector or user it might make more sense for?

How will you handle one buyer and multiple sellers?

Great question. In the case of one buyer and multiple sellers, the buyer would receive offers through internal messaging and simply choose the one they prefer.

Do you see any issue with that process, or anything you think could be improved there?

Nobody buys watches anymore, there are too many people buying watches.
