What is your perfect vacation watch?

How safe is the place you're going? How relatively wealthy? When I went to Africa it was a £10 Casio. Something that I wouldn't care if it got stolen, something that someone probably would likely not want to steal. And also something that doesn't rub my relative wealth in when I'm somewhere in which people live in shacks.
When I went to Menorca and Switzerland on the other hand, it was the SMPc.
Kudos to you for being the adventurous type, a way of "being" I sometimes envy. We live in a small world, and I get the sense I am missing some awesome experiences when I make a choice not to vacation to lands where people live in shacks. It just seems so un-vacation-like as I have come to define vacation as a place to visit that caters to its guests and their comfort.
I think perhaps when my daughter is grown? But then I'll be 60 when she turns 18, so who knows how I'll feel about taking a vacation where I would be smart to wear a cheap watch if anything?

To be fair, it wasn't me staying in the shacks. It was a safari and for the most part we were staying in a pretty nice "tent" on the Maasai Mara. I have to admit to a bit of Western white middle class guilt when we go through the shack areas, but hopefully our tourist dollars filtered down somewhere

Well stated. Living in a tourist state that I do my choice would be none. It might come some day soon but I would want to care not the time of day and be late for the plane home.

My vacay watch was always been my Seiko Kinetic. I bought it on a trip during college with friends, so it has always had sentimental value. Not to mention it was more than my broke self should have been spending at the time now that I think about it, which makes me laugh. Still love it.

Now my adventure watch is my PO 45.5.

Very wide range of watches. I don't have the watch yet but I wouldn't mind a new rolex gmtmaster. Really I just want something that can go underwater and withstand the elements. Too bad you can't go diving with speedys, I would love to take mine on vacation 🙁 Rules out any leather bands and vintage pieces so I feel like it's really limited to gmts and divers.

Would a Rolex 5513 from the late 80's L serial be able to withstand diving?

I am currently on holiday for three months in Eastern Europe and I took my geneve dynamic, which looked great until we decided to climb the narrowest minaret in the world and it took quite a few knocks and scratches. Next time I am taking my old tag F1 which is one of my daily wearers.

It's usually this one:

Currently and mostly on this strap:

It's reliable, water resistant to 100m (even if I forget to lock down the crowns), automatic, and has an alarm function that certainly comes in handy. And most people have no idea it's a relatively expensive watch...

Cheers, Al

Very nice JLC! I've been thinking about picking up a deep sea tribute as my main vacation/diver but it's a toss up between that and a gmt master.

When you said that you seldom use the Seitz Al, I didn't realise that you meant you only use it as a prop. 😉

Apple Watch for me. 😜 Inexpensive enough that loss, damage, or theft wouldn't be too troublesome, comfortable rubber strap, and all the features and conveniences that it affords. Depending on the vacation type and locale, I might bring along a mechanical to wear during, but it'd be in my carry-on during the actual traveling while my Apple Watch would be on my wrist.

I'm not even sure where my Seitz set is to be honest...indeed the most use it's received is as a prop...

My staking set is also equipped for jewelling, but of course the most common tool used for that purpose is the Horia, which I use pretty much every day...

I wore me Seiko this year. Relatively inexpensive and does not draw attention.

Not vintage, I know, but one of these is on its way.......

No worries about scratches, water resist etc. 😁

This is exactly why I got mine. I didn't want to rough up the 1969 or the 1971 sub. I don't really like the ceramic gmt line but I at 300 ft water resistance and GMT and good shock resistance with the same movements and the Explorer 2 I just figured that was the best choice for me. So I got the 2004 for my sins b-day. First full T series ( no holes in case) and pre ceramic so still has a smooth line on the case.

Really nice, but I suspect I need some kind of therapy as there must be something wrong in that I just can't take to a watch with a cyclops no matter how beautiful it is 🙁

LOL, no therapy needed. it's an acquired taste. I like it. there is something a little retro about it and it breaks the symmetry just enough to make it interesting.
