What is "Vintage"?

There is no pure definition of vintage when you have so many age groups and opinions here.
Being a member of a long while here I have seen many of these threads that all come to the same conclusion. It’s up to the individual.

For me it’s 1971 pre Quartz.
I have some Quartz watches, I wear them, I understand their significance in horological history. Hell I use one to set my manual and automatic watches every time I change ( as I know it’s more precise than the Speedmaster I have worn all week.
Would I buy them for part of a collection I have

No
Do I understand @Rochete s opinion and respect it. Yes

If your asking me about vintage cars it would be when carburettors stopped.

It’s a opinion of each and everyone of us.

I’ve had my nephew call my 30G iPod brick vintage when he saw it a while back 😗
(Still works on a dock👍👍 and it’s older than him)

While I don't think there is an agreed upon standard for vintage status, and there will likely never be one, I also don't think that it is up to each individual to determine. If that were the case then there would be no point in calling anything vintage. I think that over time a group dynamic develops, and that is the sweet spot I am looking for. What better place than here, where watch lovers congregate? I do believe that there is a generational aspect to this. If I were to guess the average age of most members here, I would put it at 40+. The reason I say that is that it takes a bit of time to establish the resources to purchase one or more of the types of watches we are discussing. An over 40 group is more likely to have a longer view, while a younger demographic, like your nephew, thinks of everything pre-dating his young existence as ancient. In any case, I would rather have the standard set by a watch lover, than by a watch seller trying to convince me that a 1998 Speedmaster is vintage in 2019. So let the conversation continue.

Yet again it's 25 years for customs declaration. SET There
It can't be set here when you have hundreds of different views personally.

I think once Tritium stopped for me would be the end of vintage, as we don't quite know how Super Luminova will patina. Any ideas on what a watch with Super Luminova will look in 50+ years?

From what I heard from my friend who worked at Omega as Product Manager, it’s so stable that 50yrs later it will probably look exactly it does today. 😉

What about dress watches like Constellations and Seamasters that don’t have lume. 😉
