What is the right stem for Omega 196.0078 (cal 1342)

Hi all, good evening.

I bought a vintage omega and I am trying to fix it. The watch was missing the crown and the stem was stuck inside.

I've managed to take it out (though haven't been able to fully remove the movement from the case, gold plated case, see below pic 1).

The stem seems to be attached to a remanent part of the old crown (possibly with glue) and don't know how to remove that bit in order to reuse the original stem (See pic 2)

My options are:

1) find a replacement stem (but don't know what is the right chinese stem for this watch/calibre, already bought some for 1342 movement and don't fit)
2) remove the remanent part of the crown from the stem (with some watchmaker sourcery) and reuse the old stem with the new replacement original crown i've managed to find.

Any help with either of these options will be massively appreciated (or any alternative view to solving this problem).

All good wishes and thanks for even bothering to read this.
Patricio

Looks like 72213409100 for the 16.7 mm long version.

Longer stem is available - 72213409115 this is 24.7 mm long.

You also need a new crown specific to the cal. 1342. The crown looks like this one:

Turning of the crown sets the hour hand. The second and minute hands are set by pushing the center button.

Thank you all for such generous responses.

I do have an original replacement crown (like the one shared by lejaune in the picture), however I am missing the stem. I feel tempted to purchase the stem recommended by Archer, (Looks like 72213409100 for the 16.7 mm long version.) but I am a bit doubtful as when I opened the watch and tried to remove the movement from the case I didn't manage to do so (if anyone knows the intricancies of how to remove the movement from the case for this type of watch, maybe a link to a video, please do let me know - Picture below)

So I am thinking that If I do purchase the stem and then try to put it on the watch and it doesn't work then I will have to figure out how to fully remove the movement from the case (and do a full disasembly of the watch).

Still a bit undecided as the replacement parts on ebay are around 20/30£.

Anyhow, your contributions so far are very much appreciated.

Thanks for your generosity.

All good wishes.

The 1342 watches I have worked on have plastic movement rings around the movement. The movement comes out with the ring first. I can't tell from your picture whether there is a movement ring or not. If not, you may have to take it out from the front.

Tool 106 is a crystal lift, so I guess the movement comes out through the front. Just a guess.

I had come to a similar realisation after failing to take the movement out (and due to the lack of plastic rings inside), that it perhaps comes out the front. I don't have the right tools for that I think, but will start studying how to do that. Thanks again!

I do think your guess is likely correct. Will hope that I can just replace the stem, but otherwise I'll make myself knowledgeable on how to remove the front of the watch in case that is needed. Thanks again!

Wanted to leave a link to a video I made about this work in progress, a few more videos to come as I navigate this learning process.

New at watchmaking and YouTube, so please be patient.

Omega quartz battery change and stem removalYouTube video

Of course your contributions are fundamental to this exploration process, so again thanks for your continued generosity.

All good wishes,
Patricio.

Hi, did you have any joy with fitting new crown? I have a 1343 movement, with push button crown. When I press the button the time stops but when I repress the minutes hand doesn't move and button remains pressed in until I pull crown out. I am wondering if the push button crown is faulty. I am nervous about taking existing crown off with force to examine as ghe watch actually works otherwise. Is the push crown screwed onto stem or pushed on tight?

Hi I had luck with my watch operation and i managed to replace the crown successfully. I will advice you to 1) don’t force the crown out 2) find a video of someone taking the crown and stem properly for that kind of movement. 3) if you have no experience or appropriate tools to do so, don’t risk it send it to a professional 4) if you want to get into watchmaking maybe start with a chinese seagull movement and after a few successful assemblies venture into your omega.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Thank you for kind advice. I've been scouring the Internet for push button crown assembly video, with no joy. When you push your crown button in for 5 or 6 seconds before repressing for setting mnutes, does your button pop back out? Mine stays in, I'm not sure if it is supposed to stay in or pop back out. I've never had this function work so no idea what should happen, I bought the constellation as a spares/ repair.

I will defo by a seagull to practice.

Pressing and holding the button will stop the watch. If you want to set the minute (and second) hand, you press the button and hold for 5 seconds, then release the button and repress it immediately after. The second and minute hands will advance at 32x the normal speed until you release the button..

Thanks. My push button function is faulty. When I press button for 5 seconds the time stops moving but when I quickly repress it does nothing. Hoping it is just a faulty push button crown. I don't know how to remove crown from stem to inspect or clean so I may have to source a new crown with stem attached for now as my watch repairing skills are still at the early stages.
