What is the Omega Forum story?

They where awarded by squirrels. Squirrels are no longer present on the board see earlier member comments.

Ah, I see. So then is it possible for someone else to take on the mantle I wonder?? I know that probably there isn't someone close to that level of ... "assertive cynicism" as @padders put it aptly, but still. I think it was a fun feature of the forum that deserves some reviving.

It actually came from Rolex Forums not WUS, one of the most active Omega communities at the time back in about 2009 was TRF and Trev and I met there as I had a 1680 sub and Trev had I think a 116200 Datejust.

It was a bit embarrassing at times being Omega fans in a corner of Rolex forums but the people were great and we enjoyed it. One of the difficulties though is we had people posting their new Planet Oceans and replies from people like “no bad but it’s a shame you didn’t save up and get a Submariner” as the perception of many people there was you only buy an Omega if you couldn’t afford a Rolex.

There was actually a thread like that I relied to saying something like “you know a lot of people just want an Omega and prefer it to a Rolex especially with the new Calibre 8500 being more modern than the Calibre 3135” and I ended up getting a pm, not rude necessarily but basically a mod asking me if I was trolling or trying to start trouble. This was in the Omega sub forum I might add. Trev was a very talented creative designer and I was a backend / server guy so between us we decided to start work on a dedicated forum and registered the domain.

A guy not long after suggested creating an omega forum and did, while we were still doing development and design work in 2010 but it was a bad service covered in ads and quickly died off.

We launched in March 2011 and it was initially just a group of around 30-35 of us from the TRF Omega subforum and very slow with repetitive what is my watch worth questions and I’d often be googling like mad to help answer them as there were no others at the time. It actually makes me laugh sometimes when people say what is my watch worth threads are too common now because the first 100-200 threads on this site from early 2011 were nothing but that!
A great story after a great question asked! Thank you Ash for creating this platform and thank the PO for asking the right question!

....as the perception of many people there was you only buy an Omega if you couldn’t afford a Rolex....

I have been a member since May 2012.

I came to OF after wearing my Invicta for 6 months. Back then, I thought who the heck spends that much money on a watch. Rolex was totally out of the question given the price point. But I wanted a luxury watch, and at that time, the Speedmaster seemed to be the best of the luxury watches with the lowest price point. Little did I know these Speedmasters are a black hole.

Due to a lot of assistance from members here I have an awesome Speedmaster collection. The enabling that goes on here is second to none.

Big thanks to Trev and Ash.

I may be wrong, but I think customized avatars are "awarded" (by mods?).
That’s how I got mine. (From the guy with no filters or brakes)

10th Anniversary OF/ Omega collaboration watch will be new 2915s with metal Base 1000 bezels. Production limited to one per member. Cost -- same as in the late 1950s. Must sign a legal agreement indicting watch can never be sold, or all proceeds will be forfeited to the owners of OF.

Let us hope that House Martens (aka Beech Martens) do not turn up to take that vacant niche. Larger, noisier and do a lot more damage....

You do realize there is in fact a secret society among the forum Illuminati known as "the Weasels". I won't name them, but their presence is felt daily.

(searching for "weasels" may be useful.)

great story, indeed. i am relatively a new member in this forum, oriented towards omega vintage watches and modestly contributed to the wealth of information available here. very thankful too to learn from the shared knowledge of all expert members. I guess it is the atmosphere of respect to one's opinion, though head-on opposite sometimes, that brings this forum to attain its success in a short period. one good aspect and advantage on the success of the OF is the wide variety and long line of omega watches and choices to share some fun about, or frustrations, vintage or new.

kodus to the people behind OF.😉

New here too, I like this place. I'm active in a guitar forum where the #1 rule is "be nice", that's not a rule here, but the vibe is the same. This is a nice place. Came here only because I wanted to buy an nice Omega, my dad gave me an appreciation for Omegas. I learned lots, zeroed in on the one that I wanted and after a failed attempt, got the my perfect fit. Recently tried to buy another, didn't work out, lots of sketchy sellers out there. I'll be staying as there's more offered here than just watch advise, although this place isn't so good for the budget. Thanks for sharing the history,

Great forum, I'm constantly learning which is great and there are lots of great photos of watches. The forum on the other side of the coin makes me spend more time thinking about watches and encouraging me to buy another watch. That maybe a good thing or not. 😁

Something else: many years ago we had a thread about the then members. Names, who and where they are, pictures of the area, where they live, some pics. Of the members ( if they wanted), watch collecting history and more.... Is that still somewhere in the archives ? Kind regards. Achim
