I just saw his like and realized @kyle L is member number 27, and among the very first to join us in March 2011, did you originally come across from TRF with us too Kyle?

Hmmm. I’m almost afraid to ask what got him banned?
He didn’t put a lid on it.

Might have been WUS, but I used to be on both. 😀

Great thread on the start of OF. Being retired I enjoy reading the wide range of topics that can be discussed on this forum.

Thanks for the facts about the origins of OF, I was about to ask the same question. I did a similar thing about 3 years ago with model steam forums, got banned from the UK based one for being very Australian [tell it as it is] so started a steam engines downunder forum. Were a small forum but very tight knit with a lot of great input.

May OF go on for many more years and bring on the OF LE😀

It actually came from Rolex Forums not WUS, one of the most active Omega communities at the time back in about 2009 was TRF and Trev and I met there as I had a 1680 sub and Trev had I think a 116200 Datejust.

It was a bit embarrassing at times being Omega fans in a corner of Rolex forums but the people were great and we enjoyed it. One of the difficulties though is we had people posting their new Planet Oceans and replies from people like “no bad but it’s a shame you didn’t save up and get a Submariner” as the perception of many people there was you only buy an Omega if you couldn’t afford a Rolex.

There was actually a thread like that I relied to saying something like “you know a lot of people just want an Omega and prefer it to a Rolex especially with the new Calibre 8500 being more modern than the Calibre 3135” and I ended up getting a pm, not rude necessarily but basically a mod asking me if I was trolling or trying to start trouble. This was in the Omega sub forum I might add. Trev was a very talented creative designer and I was a backend / server guy so between us we decided to start work on a dedicated forum and registered the domain.

A guy not long after suggested creating an omega forum and did, while we were still doing development and design work in 2010 but it was a bad service covered in ads and quickly died off.

We launched in March 2011 and it was initially just a group of around 30-35 of us from the TRF Omega subforum and very slow with repetitive what is my watch worth questions and I’d often be googling like mad to help answer them as there were no others at the time. It actually makes me laugh sometimes when people say what is my watch worth threads are too common now because the first 100-200 threads on this site from early 2011 were nothing but that!

Thanks for sharing. I am new here also and I was wondering how this great forum was started

Thanks for the great forum. Which has ended up costing me plenty of money and time ... all well spent of course!

Thank you veterans for the OF history! Very fascinating and meaningful to learn how what I am proudly a part of came to be.

While we are on the topic, I also wanted to ask... is there a way to bring back whatever system there was to put some text under the forum username, assigned by the user or by others?

I may be wrong, but I think customized avatars are "awarded" (by mods?).

Is the certain member still active anywhere else? I rather miss him, it would be good to get a refresher dose of his over assertive cynicism. He was into wine I seem to recall.

Very interesting to hear the back-story. Many thanks for this post. The OF platform is particularly enjoyable to use.

So is my wife. Her favorite? "You never leave enough time to clean this place up!"

Don't be afraid to ask!.... We all want to know!😁
It's very, very difficult to house-break squirrels so in the end the mods had to release him into the wild.

Answer should be: "We bought an Omega because we don't want a 'fakkin' Rolex that can't pass the NASA tests!"😡

Thans to OP for asking this question and all the Mods behind, making this forum work as flawlessly as possible.
Omega should do a collaboration with OF, I’d be in.

I think so too... I think, actually they were written by that certain member. But right now there's no system to get it in some capacity and so that's what I am wondering.

It would be fun to bring this back indeed...

Re custom titles

They where awarded by squirrels. Squirrels are no longer present on the board see earlier member comments.
