WHAT is the actual value of a Pie-Pan Constellation?

Branching off from here, and as I promised here: https://omegaforums.net/threads/thoughts-on-this-168-005.189214/page-2#post-2561325

Lately, Pie Pan values seem to be insane. A stainless dog-leg with a crystal damaged so bad you could barely see the dial, 1/3 of a bracelet, and a likely broken movement just went for $1700! It was not long ago that $1500 was the entry price to a GOOD pie-pan. We have been laughing at the ebay'ers trying to sell mid tiers/redials for $2500, but frankly, those are beginning to seem reasonable.

Am I just taking crazy-pills, or what? Thoughts?

i have also certainly noticed an increase in asking prices on Chrono and dealers more broadly. Always can be negotiated down however.

Thanks for starting this @ErichKeane

Prices have skyrocketed for whatever reason. It wasn’t long ago that I purchased a flawless 14902 on original beads of rice for 1050. Now you can’t get into a good example for under 1700 unless you are incredibly patient.

Plenty of redials and over polished examples are going for over that now.

Ooof, heck of an ask either way! That said, my understanding is black dials are pretty rare? THOUGH, doesn't that fail the MOY test?
black dials are rare indeed - but for 68300 or 6380 - either way - complete joke haahaah

I'm not sure that you could get anymore 'MOY' than this.

The thing is there are pie-pans and then there are pie-pans.

There is always the debate between lyre lugs and dog-leg lugs, but for me lyre lugs win hands down every time ( However I do own a dog-leg pie-pan, but find it a bit dainty by design). There are of course other, even later Constellation pie-pan dials such as the 1960's straight lug cases 168.010 for example, but these although attractive do not have the street cred of the earlier ref's and are therefore less valuable.

But still I'd say the best, most attractive and most valuable pie-pans are the classic lyre lug 2652/2852/2853 type references. The case are chunky, the movements are great and they ooze class on the wrist.

When gold is over $5,000 per oz., you have to expect crazy pricing even for non-gold watches.

The money that was going towards gold versions is now being used for the steel and gold-capped peices, increasing both demand and prices.

The supply of all original and lightly polished pie pans have always been small and a piece fresh to market will always have significant bidding activity on eBay and other auction sites.

68k is a mistake indeed, 6.8k is more like it.
Far from being a joke from a dealer by the way. A SS pie pan arrowhead 2852 in black easily goes for that kind of money nowadays. I’ve seen 4 move for such (and higher) amounts within the last 18 months.
This one isn’t in the best shape so personally I wouldn’t necessarily agree on the price tag. But a joke? Unfortunately not.

These are timeless. I would expect them to outpace the general vintage market until they are all gone one day.

There are pie pans and then there are their primordial precursors that are rarer, more historical, and arguably as attractive as your pedestrian dog legged pie pans including the Centenaries, Rail Tracks, and ref 2648. True vintage Connie aficionados are keen to pursue great examples of these.
