Out of Hospital now after a heart operation and in recovery mode with lots of stress free bed rest, finished the book from my above post and luckily found I had the 2nd one in the series ( trilogy ) at home having picked it up a few months ago with a lot of other SF books.
So started it last night.
Picked up this book at a charity shop during the week.
Doing a wiki on the writer made me keen to imbibe on his form of literary style and now that I am 35 pages in it's one I approve of.
The author is known for writing in a time, style and manner of sensibilities that predate the times that they are written in and unashamedly so!
This is written in about 1920 21 and is set just post the great war in 1918 but you would swear the date was 1880, bravo!
I will endeavour to find more from this writer and his quirky style of humour and writing.
Twenty thosand years in Sing Sing, a nonfiction book written by Lewis E. Lawes, the warden of Sing Sing prison from 1920 to 1941. The book was first published in 1932 and tells the story of life in the Sing Sing prison, some good, a lot bad, with quite a lot of humour included. I read this book first time around 1980 but it is very much readable today. The book was made into a film as well, starring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis in 1932.
Found today, a first edition Dornford Yates novel, Berry and Co which features the much loved characters and stories of Bertram Pleydell ( Berry ) that made Dornford Yates famous, apparently reprinted many many times even in the 1980's, not bad for a book first published in 1920.
This edition has plenty of clues as to it's original owners both of whom appear quite famous and one with a connection to the original Dr Who !! It may have even been his book, certainly the timing is correct.
Also featuring some original artwork by one of the owners on the back inside page.
It's certainly on my reading list for this afternoon.
Just purchased this and received from the author, the Mugwump book which describes a 1960's journey and return journey between 2 universities, one in England and the other in Capetown in a 1930 Austin 16/6 with out support vehicles or crew, an amazing achievement.
Mugwump turns 100 years old in 2030 and a possible 3rd transcontinental expedition is possibly in the wind, another world first under its belt.
You won't find this book on the shelves in a bookshop or a library, this is a limited print run in 2026.
