·I’m also 100% in the AT camp. I own 2 Speedmasters - but my wife surprised me for my 60th birthday and chose the AT “European Masters Golf Edition” in 2014, with black dial and green Seamaster text and hour numbers, and green second hand tip. It has the signature lyre lug case and the specs are outstanding. I enjoy the sapphire glass back with view of movement. I like the date window.
This is my favorite watch and I wear it almost daily, over Speedmasters and other nice chronographs. It is much more versatile watch, both sporty and dressy. The fact that it was a surprise and such a great choice makes it even more special. And each time I wear it I am happy and grateful to her!
So I vote for surprising him with the green AT. Go for the home run, not the double. Get a Speedmaster the next time
