Wedding gift- new FOiS or aqua terre

I would like to buy my fiancé a watch for our wedding. I have narrowed it down between 3- the new omega speedmaster FOIS and the aqua terre in either black or dark green.
We are eloping in Ireland so I thought the green might be nice keepsake but the speedmaster is also very sharp looking…if you were gifted one of these what would you like?

Your fiance is very lucky. The general advice is just to take your fiance out shopping. These are great options but it's hard to account for personal taste.

If it was me, though, I'd go for the FOIS.

DSloan has it right. You really can't account for your fiance's personal taste, so it's best to take him shopping and let him select the watch. Although the "surprise" element will be lost, you'll have the assurance of knowing that you are getting him exactly what he wants. Obviously, he's a discriminating man with impeccable taste - he certainly chose a wonderful person to be his partner in life.

It would be the Speedmaster for me. The Aqua Terra is known as a "go anywhere do anything" watch, but to me that makes it sort of generic looking and personally I don't get any joy from it.

so would a Speedy NOT qualify for a one watch collection?

just curious your thoughts

To the OP

lose the element of surprise. Take the fiancee watch shopping.

I support this message 100%

Also just wanted to throw out a big “good on ya!” to the OP for wanting to surprise their fiancé and also seeking the advice. Looking forward to reading how it unfolds!

Not sure either of those is a bad choice, if you weren't going to ruin the surprise I would lean towards the speedmaster.

All said above and better to go with your fiancé, not least as a picture can't be compared to actually seeing the watch in real life, and most importantly on the wrist. I've changed my mind about several watches once seen in person and seeing how the feel when worn.

For what it's worth though, my preference would definitely be the FOIS Speedy, and this from someone who didn't used to like chronographs. It's been noted above but whilst the AT is an absolutely great GADA watch, that could make it feel too generic and less special, especially as a gift for such a big occasion. Having seen it in person, the new FOIS is a real knockout.

And two thoughts from my side:
I would continue to pursue the idea of a surprise. Sure, this means that you have to take a closer look at the selection. Listen to your heart! That's what makes your gesture so wonderful.
If you ask me, it would definately be the Speedmaster for me.

Go with the AT its the better watch all around. Better water resistance, automatic winding and a sapphire crystal. It can be worn for formal occasions and with T-shirt and shorts. The Speedmaster is more of a tool watch, its like giving him a wrench or something as a wedding gift.

He is a lucky man and he will think of you and the happiest day of his life each time he looks at that green aqua terra. Good luck with the choice, the wedding and everything.

Okay 🙄 Different watch yes, but the Ploprof is far more comparable to a wrench than the 2024 FOiS, yet it doesn’t look out of place in this pic. The FOiS will be just fine at a wedding.

Better water resistance
Maybe so but the Speedmaster has 50m water resistance, which is 167ft. That’s plenty of protection.

Yes of course, the ploprof is more of a tool watch than the FOIS and the FOIS is more of a tool watch than the AT. And 50 m is more than enough, I am just influenced by all the " dont shower, dont swim, dont do the dishes and dynamic water pressure" treads that have been posted here. Not to mention the " dont move the lawn with a moon watch" 😉. The chores part is probably important for a bride to be 😀.

I’m going with the minority and will suggest the AT. I currently own a 1969 Speedmaster Professional and have owned many other Speedmasters going back as far as 1976. I also own a 2012 Aqua Terra Skyfall 38.5mm with the vertical teak styled blue dial, which is probably the most sought after AT that is no longer in production:
Because I have owned both Speedmasters and an AT, I think that I have a reasonable basis to compare the two. In my opinion, the AT is the more versatile of the two and really is a stunningly beautiful watch. There is nothing generic about its appearance. The AT also has better specs and features than the FOIS: it has automatic winding (the FOIS is manually wound); a longer power reserve (60 hours vs 50 hours for the FOIS); a date window (none on the FOIS); a time zone function (you can change the position of the hour hand without stopping the minute and second hands, which is great for traveling when you change time zones or making the change from daylight savings time to standard time, or vice versa (the FOIS doesn’t have this feature); anti-reflective coating on both sides of the crystal which makes it much easier to see the dial without reflections (the FOIS has the anti-reflective treatment on the inside of the crystal only); and the AT also has a display case back so your fiancé can view that beautiful movement (no such thing on the FOIS). The chronograph function on the FOIS is nice, but the novelty wears off quickly and then your fiancé will seldom use it. Both are beautiful watches and no one can account for anyone else's taste, but the AT is the better watch in every way.

I like the dial in the FOIS, but I would also suggest the AT. gbesq summed my thoughts pretty well in his post above.

Regarding the color, I like your idea of matching the green color with the location. It depends on your fiance and their personality, watch collection (if any), wardrobe, etc. I think both look great, black goes with everything but that green is classy enough to make it work.

Speedmasters cost more to service than an Aqua Terra does, so if that would be a financial or emotional consideration over a lifetime then it’s something to consider

Green is popular now, green dials everywhere, but Nehru jackets and leisure suits were popular once, too. A don't think green dials will be perpetually attractive.

Probably not, but another advantage that the AT has over the FOIS: lots of options for dial color.

While I’m biased towards the FOiS, I actually really like the reason the OP has chosen the green dial:
We are eloping in Ireland so I thought the green might be nice keepsake
That little detail relates it to their journey and makes it emotionally more special. That’s just me though.
