I always laugh when the media, at least in the US, will refer to a mass murderer or other degenerate as a 'gentleman' in their reporting. 'This gentleman was arrested today for the murders of six coeds over three years'......blah, blah, blah.

I’m not sure where you’re getting this. Ironically using “gentleman” to signify lack of respect is common throughout the English-speaking world. American news media tends to imitate copspeak in crime reportage, with two individuals exiting the vehicle before fleeing the scene and whatnot.
