Spent a few hours this afternoon visiting an owl centre in central Scotland and what a great time it was and highly recommended 👍

Biggest surprise was this fella who I am sure @STANDY and our other antipodean members will recognise.

Magnificent birds, we often have the local barn owls doing there hunting opposite our house. They have flown straight past me yards away once before, complete silence.

We also have an owl sanctuary, apparently it includes one which was in the Harry Potter films as my sons school was sponsoring it when he was a pupil.

Edit: Here we go, The Raptor Foundation.

Great pictures @Alpha and even more reason for a visit to Scotland! Was looking at pictures of Camusdarach today...amazing looking coast lines. Will definitely plan a trip after Covid.

Those are some terrific photos. What a great place for some peaceful refuge from all the Covid concern.

I haven't been back to Scotland in over a decade - I did my postgraduate degree in Scotland quite some time ago. My wife and I were saying earlier today that we need to arrange a visit when all this is over. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Great photos there.
Is this one cleverly photographed in an enclosure or do some of them have more freedom?

Did ol' Kookie let you hear his monkey laugh?
" ... How gay his life must be!"

Here's a rather spectacular owl photo taken by a great nature photographer, our very own @cicindela.

Beautiful creatures. We have an owl that practically lives in our backyard. No idea of the gender but we named her Bernice. Most days it’s very serene. But some days the hooting makes me want owl stew for dinner lol

I showed the pictures to my youngest son who loves both parrots, owls, and all things bird. He said they look so soft and wanted to know if you can touch them or have the perch on you?

He now wants to go to Scotland... maybe next year.

Should have added that the indoor flying display was amazing with the female handler providing so much information on the different birds, habitats etc. Birds actually fly low and occasionally brush your hair 🥰

Not a sound from Kookie i'm afraid. Snapped through the cage but they all have flying time.

Lovely pictures. There use to be similar in the High Peak near Buxton Derbyshire which we use to frequent as it was reasonably local. Unfortunately it has closed 🙁 Always a nice afternoon out with some nice memories.

If the owl ever manages to get inside your house, just a tip from personal experience...turn off the ceiling fans!

Cheers, Al

Any and all owls are invited to my neighborhood to feast on the squirrels who dig in my garden and chew on my siding.

I went to a sanctuary a few years back. Incredible birds / silent flight - and very expressive. Flying cats in some respects. Very romantic as well by all accounts … whatever position they chose for mating they can always maintain eye contact...….

Top tip - if you watch a flying display / hunting display … don't wear a coat / hood with fur trim … as one lady found out during our visit :0)

Squirrels digging in the garden don't get me started, a lot of effort and no little expense attempting to set out a lawn and all was going well before the little cuties decided to start burying there chestnuts everywhere 🤬

Surprisingly what I did learn was that only the owls without waterproof feathers are silent, waterproof feathers actually make quite a lot of sound.
Probably like wearing a woolen sweater as opposed to a waterproof jacket.
