(George Carlin Voice))Yawn. Imagine if he, gasp, did something to the watch that required fixing or a service or having a damn PATINA? Good grief!! God forbid it may lead to the watch being involved in real LIFE and have a STORY attached to it which would make it so valuable he questioned wearing it but then he remembered he didn’t give a damn it’s a watch and he’s gonna die one day and hopefully the watch succumbs to the temperatures inside the crematorium oven and thank god it isn’t indestructible!!!

Amen guys, it will be on my wrist through whatever I do aside from deep sea exploration or maybe jack hammering. If it gets a little banged up that just makes it mine. If I couldn't afford to use it I wouldn't have bought it.

Also I am only good at three things. Deep sea exlporin, jack hammerin, and makin love to beautiful women. And I left my flippers on the boat. So I guess the speedy is safe while I practice my last skill.

This is a serious question in case anyone thinks I am just being a wiseass. What exactly is it that makes so many people "cringe" about getting a speedmaster wet. I am certainly not new to watches even old or exspensive ones. And the speedmaster seems to have the same basic waterproofing measures as most watches that are reasonably waterproof. Meaning O rings on the case back, crown, and pushers. Other than just unnecessary worry or the lack of a recent service is there something I am missing.
I am the proud owner of a new to me speedmaster pro and it has gone everywhere with me since I bought it. Including the occasional dip or shower if I am uncomfortable leaving it in a locker unattended. No problems and I don't expect any it is a high quality well built watch and will be serviced again before any seals have a chance of drying out and failing.
I guess I just don't understand having a watch renowned for its toughness and extensive testing and being afraid to wear it anyplace but a dry clean environment with no chance of so much as a little bump dirt or moisture getting near it. ( ok maybe that last comment was a little smartassy )

Every watch that is water resistant, will be water resistant until it leaks! You’ll learn! Check out this earlier thread.

@Gt390

It’s more like you can most likely get away with it until you can’t... The pushers are a weak spot hence the asymmetrical case. Why risk it?

Would love to hear your view on submarines one day 😗

Read about the Thresher and the Kursk! And while you’re at it, the Hunley! Wanna know my opinion on anything that is supposed to be water proof or water resistant?

Bigger offense was giving it to Omega for service. Oy.
Yeah! For a ‘68 that dial is not original is it? No applied logo, looks like short hour markers and magazine got reference wrong too, no.? 145022 in 68??

this story reminds me in some way about some photos for LIFE magazine taken on Donald "Deke" Slayton's birthday where he dived into the pool of the Hotel Inn at Cocoa Beach - Florida

There was a 022 from -68 but it doesn’t look like that. Nasty parts watch probably. The seller perhaps paid off a £5K debt with a £2K watch.

Reminds me of the Aziz Ansari talking watches, when he told the story about jumping in the pool with a Rolex 6034 from 1955...

What exactly is it that makes so many people "cringe" about getting a speedmaster wet.

Because there is a ton of misinformation about what a watch with 50 meters of water resistance, that the Speedmaster Pro has, really means. If you read various articles, internet experts, and forums, they will tell you over and over again that it's only good for splashes or being out in the rain...maybe. If you listen to Omega (you know the people who made the watch) it's clear that 50 m depth rating means it can go to 50 m.

Someone will jump in with the "dynamic pressure" argument about moving your arms under water adding more pressure, but it's been debunked with real actual math. The added pressure is minimal, and unless you are Aquaman the speed your arm would have to move isn't possible.

If the watch is properly maintained, which includes regular pressure testing and changing of the seals, it will be water resistant. Of course someone can point to examples where watches have failed, but all watches can fail and leak.

That brings me to the corollary of the general advice given that you need a real diver just to get the watch wet, and that's the idea that because it's rated for 300/600/1000 m depth rating, it will "never leak" even if I don't take care of it.

Yes freak things can happen, but if you use your head there's no huge risk. But using it under water or not is a personal decision, and if people decide not to, I have no problems with that. However when people make false claims about the capability, that's not cool.

The number 1 cause of watches leaking is lack of proper maintenance. Anyone who tells you any different is either lying or doesn't have a clue what they are talking about.

Cheers, Al

Thank you for chiming in Archer. I realize my comment came off sounding a little more like a wise crack than I had intended (other than the part about jack hammerin and deep sea diving which were totally serious). Your comments are basically my opinion as well. Just stated more clearly. I doubt I will "learn" any differently than I have in nearly 40 years or so of wearing and collecting mechanical watches.

Those guys... ::facepalm1::::facepalm1::::facepalm1::::facepalm1::::facepalm1::
I wonder if they have to 1099 themselves in April...for all their value-creating activities throughout the year...🙄
