Very rough. Maybe it’s from 1871?

Ed, every now and then I get the feeling you don't have a direction concerning what you want 😀

To be honest mate, I like good deals and pretty things 😉 and lately a number of both have come up.

I have spent the $$ I have allotted to watches so any further additions will need to be at the cost of a current piece I think, unless it is cheap, the chance to make a significant profit or I can convince my misses.

It's like a mechanic selling a used Ferrari for $20K, they know something we don't.

Very often true, with such an easily Googleable name right on the dial, people with a Speedmaster to sell often think that their 3590.50 is worth as much as a 145.022-69 these days. It looks the same, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've often thought about buying a vintage Speedmaster. So school me. What makes you think that this watch wasn't completely trashed? Yes, the seller has good feedback on eBay, but from the sound of the add the seller had no idea about the condition of the watch he was selling. The condition is suspect to say the least. Are you simply risking $1800 on the hope that the movement hasn't been damaged beyond repair?

It takes a lot for a movement to be damaged beyond repair. I'm shipping this Speedmaster back to it's owner next week after bringing it back to life...it wasn't cheap but it was far from trashed even in this condition.

Thanks. I guess its all about how much one needs to put into it. In the case of someone who is looking for an investment it comes down to what they can get out of it. To someone like me who is looking for a vintage Speedy for personal use it comes down to how much am I willing to spend? Even if I don't buy this one I am very curious to see what it is? When I find out I will let you know to see if it is worthwhile going after. I appreciate all the input.

Study up on speedmaster101.com and post here if you're not sure about something.

I did some reading as you suggested. I know you know this, but I am putting it out there for the sake of the discussion. It seems that watches manufactured during the first 21 years leading up to the 145.022-78 are currently in the vintage collectible category. However, these things change and I have also read that watches with the 861 movement manufactured until 1997 may also be desirable going forward. Assuming one cannot find a pre-moon to '78, are Speedmasters manufactured between 1979 and 1997 with caliber 861 movements worth considering?

PS By the way, I have totally hijacked this thread from the original topic which was that Speedy that sold on eBay. I know that issue is closed, but it brings up the thought that there should really be an on-going thread here titled "Vintage Speedmaster 101" or something where people can ask questions about these vintage watches.

These things are always a crap shoot, if this guy is a jeweler, he knows what he has. It's like a mechanic selling a used Ferrari for $20K, they know something we don't.

For me a '71 in this condition is not really worth my time or hassle...

Best of luck in your pursuit.

Not at all. My dear old mum is a jeweller, specialises in vintage and antique jewellery. Occasionally takes watches as part ex if really pushed to do so by a customer but doesn't know the first thing about them and doesn't have the time, or desire to research the nuances of various models etc.
If she took a Speedmaster in part ex, and I wasn't around to tell her otherwise, she'd probably list it based on what she expects a modern second hand Speedmaster to be worth.
The point being even though many people now use the internet to research every individual piece they are selling, there are still individuals and dealers who value almost entirely on face to face sales etc.

All models of the classic Speedmaster Professional are worth considering, just depends on your preference. A brand-new one is still a great value too.
