Vintage Omega Seamaster Cal 552 ref 165.001 ?

Hi all,

New to the forum. Considering purchasing this vintage seamaster from a local watch dealer/servicer. I tried to take pictures as best as possible but the lighting in the place made it difficult.

I would really appreciate any insights into if there is anything obviously wrong with the piece, it's condition and how much the watch should go for in price. Please let me know if I can offer more info. I understand the inside caseback picture is too poor quality to make out what is written.

Also to clarify the watch I am most interested in is the NON-crosshair dial.

Very, very nice dials. I, for one, am partial to the crosshair version 😁

The hands on that one seem a bit too long, though. And the cases have been buffed up, I'd guess. How much is the asking price?

The owner of the watches or at least the gentleman who fronts the shop also stated that he prefers the crosshair. I am very new to this interest, I don't even own any mechanical watches. Perhaps it's due to a more refined tastes liking the cross hair.

The asking price is about $1200 CAD so, $955 USD at the exchange rate.

Looking closer at the inside caseback I can make out 165.002 and I've been searching for other examples online, I was questioning the crown at first but it seems like Omega may have release different crowns for the same case/dial combinations. Which hand should I be wary of?

I can't provide any insight on the actual watches but those are both really nice looking, if these happen to be near Montreal feel free to let me know after you've decided if you're buying one or not. I'd love to take a trip up one weekend and take a look at the other one.

I would have liked smaller hands on the version with the crosshairs, and I believe the crown on the other one is a service replacement.

At the price stated, I would have liked the watches to, at a very minimum, have been serviced first - I'd say that the prices are probably at the level you'd expect from a dealer. The yellow gasket in the cases could well be originals, meaning that they should have been replaced after a proper service.

They look NOS.

They sure look good. I'd say that the straps are wrong (obviously, the Movado one is wrong!) and the buckle should be 16mm wide, not 12-14 as the one on the one to the right. I am also a bit surprised to see so long hands on that one and the condition of the case makes me believe that they have had a good going over with a cape cod cloth. I wouldn't call them NOS.

For sure I will post and update with location when I make a decision, probably very soon!

@ConElPueblo I did bring up the issue of service as did they, they showed me the recommended Omega service table fee and for this Cal i think it was $825USD, he stated that they can do it for about half of that. Now if the watched was serviced in the past year or 2 should I request that it be done again prior to purchase?

Also the gasket that should be replaced as well prior to purchase?

Thank for the help everyone. If the price is indeed not over the top I think I'm going to go back very soon and discuss a deal. This is not something I would want to "flip" but are the value of such vintages maintaining or rising?

@turtleh - a good independent watchmaker should be around CAD 300-400, I guess. Have a look on this page for recommendations. You can replace the crown, but you will have to find one first, Omega probably doesn't carry that particular part anymore.
