Hi everybody!
Quick question here:
How do you know if a crown (lets say from Ebay) is original or not.
I'm looking for a 168.005 (SS one) crown. I've searched ebay and i found a couple of offers. The problem is all kinda looks the same (for my novice eye) but they have VERY different prices... form let's say 75 USD... to 150 USD..
So... is there a thing to look after? They all have 10 sides.. and the Omega symbol...

Thanks!

The repros I know of do not have the period correct flat feet logo. So that’s usually a great indicator.

Start with the old materials houses OFrie. Paylac(watchmaterial.com), W McCaw, Esslinger etc. Even though the selection is picked over, they did accumulate a lot of stuff over the decades. I have taken to keeping these tabs open in a separate browser window.

I have been spending a bit of time in this rabbit hole. Especially now that I found a 2577 case with no stem or crown. But I am assembling a rat-wach, so my criteria is not so pedantic. It is really easy to get lost in the lacunae of all this. Those gaps of what is and is not can be quite large. Then there is the choice of case tubes and washers to fit the crown. All this must work together.

eBay is often the place of last resort. A lot of the stuff sold there is scrap left over from other repairs. Only suitable for art projects.

If you are looking for period-correct, yes. I believe there are authentic service crowns as well.
